How well does the chain drive hold up to mud and dirt? Honda 3003x or 400ex
#1
Subject says it all. I am planning on a atv purchase and I really like the Honda 300 or 400ex. I want something sporty. I plan on riding in the rocks and mud around my area. Wanted a utility model but have not heard of one that can be a little more fun in the fast trails and small 3ft jumps. I also Need to Know is the under side armor will work to keep the damage down?

my 400ex holds up great just throw some skids on! The 400ex is great in mud i think. I just took it out in alot of snow today and it was very fun If i were you i would get the 400ex.

Depends on how much mud you take them in, neither one will do well in deep mud, and you have to watch how you go over the rocks, make sure you hit everything just right, because neither has very much ground clearance. Between the 2, I prefer the 400EX motor and handling overall, but I like the suspension on my 300EX better, the 400EX seems to hop the back end more than my 300 does, just from personal experience, the hop may be able to be worked out of the 400EX, but I never messed with the suspension to find out since it wasnt mine.

What about when in the rocks and technical areas, will the under side of the sport 300 or 400ex survive? I plan on installing the underside aluminum armor. I plan on about 20% of the time in that kind of areas.

I dont plan on getting into waist deep mud. just a foot or so and spin like crazy. Its just there is alot of rain and mud is a side effect of that rain and i dont want the chain and spocket to die in a very short period of time. I wash up after every mud bath.

My Warrior does great in the mud considering the low clearance and the nearly bald STOCK tires. The ones from the factory are the worst even when they are new. If you get a 400ex and put something like Spidertracs on it and some skidplates you should do just fine. Just don't go anywhere where you need reverse.

The underside should be ok as long as you have a skid plate, I'd be more worried about the swingarm area, since its lower, that part is more likely to get caught on rocks.
