cost on doing top end of scrambler 400?
#1
I was thinking about buying a 96 or 97 scrambler 400 for $850. The guy said the top end needs rebuilt. About how much would it cost to have this done? Or is it something i could do myself. And does this sound like a decent price if that is all it needs? thanks again

The work is time consuming, and you have to be careful and clean, but it isn't all that difficult.
I re-did the top end of my Xplorer (piston, honing cylinder, wrist pin, bearing & clips, plus all gaskets) for roughly $200. I did the labor myself, took probably 4 hours for me, but a good mechanic should be able to do it in 2 or 3.

Sounds like a damn good price ,if that's all it needs. This is just a rough figure ,but you are looking at about $50 to bore it another $100 bucks for a piston, base gasket and head gasket couple dollars. One thing you will want to look at is the counterbalancer ooil. The dipstick is next to the starter housing under the carb.If it is dry or very milky this could cost you some more money.Let us know what happens.

Don't do it. You can't trust anyone these days. Think about it, why is he selling it like this???? I guarantee you there is more wrong w/this thing than you are being told. You could end up putting some major $$$ in this. There is probably metal shavings all through this motor and who know what else. If you are taking this thing to the dealer and having it checked out you should get the owner to agree w/you that if its more than just a "top end" he should split the service check w/you. If it checks out being only "top end" needing rebuilt, then it is well spent money on your end and you know what you are getting. Having said that, I bet he will not agree to the dealer check out and the dealer will tell you there is more wrong w/this than a "top end"! Just my two cents.
I just wouldn't do it. You know how hard people are on these things!

If you do go through with the buy/rebuild, make sure to retorque the cylinder base studs after the first good engine warmup.

yeah, but even if it needs the complete motor rebuilt wouldnt it still be worth it. a whole rebuild shouldnt cost more than a $1000. should it??? Because if i go buy a used one that runs for $2,500. or more it may end up needing rebuilt soon to, right? Please Help. thanks again

alot of times when the engine is badly beat up then so is the rest of the quad so i would suggest to check all pivot points, shocks, rotors, chain/sprockets etc... for excessive wear before you buy it
