Default 83 xr 80 wont start

i have an 83 xr 80 that was bought new for me in 82. i have put new rings, head gasket, had head redone, crank, and seals put in. most of it i done. i replaced the points and new plug rode it about one hour and it started spettering and cutting out and finally died. now it wont start, it backfires like it is hitting but wont start. could i have burned the points or would it be water? i also run real sluggish untill you get it wound out then i comes on strong and would stay there untill you let off the gas. any help will be appreciated . i planned on given this to my daughter for her birthday.

When you put the points in do you clean them? There is a film on the points. If you do not clean them they will burn right away.

I agree I would start at the points. make sure they are clean and the gap is right. when was the last time the carb was cleaned? that would be my next step.
