Default PIPES TURNING RED!!

I now have done the 185 DJ jet kit stage 3, trinity full exhaust, K&N air filter. The bike seemes to be running strong but after running for a few short minutes I noticed my pipes turning red the ones that come out of the head. I had this happen a few times when the bike was bone stock. But I thought with the high flow exhaust and filter it would run a little cooler. Is this normal???

Pull your plugs. Look at the electrode. If its looks white your running lean. This means you need to get more fuel to the motor to not risk engine damage. THe plugs are the best sign of how the motor is running. If the plugs are white jet higher. This is probably why the pipe is glowing.

Ed Zackary!

You need to add some more fuel to the mix. Try a #190 main jet and see about moving the clip on the needle down one slot.

Could this also be from not having the valves adjusted properly?

I'm not sure if the valve adjustment could do it or not, however from experience I know that valve adjustment is SUPER critical to having your ATV run & start well so if you are at all concerned that your valves aren't perfect then I'd suggest checking them. On my 2001 DS I had the dealer do the '10 hour service' they charged me $50 which I thought was low - well now as I look back I'm SURE they didn't check the valves. I checked them at 90 hours and the intakes valves had zero clearance and the bike was hard starting. After adjusting the valves it starts so amazingly easy it is unbelieveable! I also checked the valves on my 2003 Baja at the same time which were fine however I still adjusted them so that they were at the exact same clearance as my 2001 so that in theory they should both need a similar amount of adjustment at the same number of hours.

You have an Air/fuel mixture screw nderneath, and to the front of your carb. Make sure it is turned OUT atleast 3 turns. Your probably just running lean on you slow idle circuits, so first adjust you air/fuel screw, then go up on your pilot jet.

Bigger.

Checked the plugs today they are black. I am going to check the valves as just a saftey check. What valve clearances should I adjust them too or what should they be at? My service book says (exhaust 0.10 to .015mm)(intake .004 to .006 in).

On the DS, it seems the exhaust valves don't move much (at least neither of mine did) so often there is no need to adjust them. However my intakes on my 2001 were just to the point of zero clearance, so when I adjusted them I opened them up to the largest recomended size of 0.006, that way they have farther to go before being out of service range. I also set my Baja to the same spec so that both ATVs should wear the same amount.
