Predator Suspension
#1
Hey guys. I'm just asking another question, I like this site so much, it really helps me out!! Well anyways, I have an '03 Predator and it has been piped, K&N, and had the carb tuned by Doug Nicholas, my dealer. My question is: The suspension is so tunable, I dont know where to start. What do you do to make it like you fellas do. Any help at all would be very helpful. Thanks again Brad

Hey Brad, There are some suspension tech pages. I'll try to dig one up. otherwise maybe someone else will chime in. One of your best add-ons for the machine are the front shock rezzi's that your dealer carries. If you're into having it setup for a great ZPS type suspension, Rathracing.com is a great place for that.
I think someone posed in the atv racing forum just recently, you might want to see if there's a reference page there.

First thing is first, pre-load settings. Have a buddy help you. Put the quad on blocks and measure from the rear axle to a point on the machine straight above. Now take if off the blocks and plop your butt on the quad in riding position with full gear. Have your buddy measure from the axle to the same spot. The difference should be abou 3.3 in. You figure this saying you want 30% pre-load sag of your total travel. The rear has 11", so 30% is 3.3 inches. Do the same for the front end by measuring at the a-arm pivots to the ground, only make it about 20% sag in the front, and the front has 10"...so about 2-2.2 in. If you add the front rezzis, there is a neat little trick where you remove a top-out spacer in the front shocks and gain an inch of travel...did it to my pred and made a sweet difference! Now, adjust compression...set it to 1, which is the softest or fastest setting meaning it will compress fast and be a softer ride. Find some whoops and start slow, just rolling them...click the compression till you find your aggressiveness meets your speed, so the shock doesn't bottom, but uses almost all the travel. By this point, the rear might be kicking on you. Now you adjust rebound which is the red collar on the bottom. Turn it all the way in...clock wise, and count 15 clicks as you turn it counter-clockwise. This is the fastest, or softest setting. Great for slow speeds, but will buck at high speeds. Turn the rebound 1 click at a time clockwise till the rear stops kicking. If you turn it clock wise too far, the rear end will start packing or not returning to position fast enough. A good sign of this is that the rear end will swap or hop left and right and try to do a 180 on you. Those are the basics...only change 1 thing at a time...you can easily kill 2 days being picky on suspension set-up...go till it feels good. If you get serious...the front compression rezzis for the front shocks are well worth the money...hope this helps!

That's what the forums are for..."happy trails" as modquad would say
By the way, you should bring that pred to some harescrambles next year in Iowa. We'll finally have a 6-7 race circuit here in Iowa...hooray!
