Default Trail Boss plug black (and less top end speed)

I have had several months of frustration of my 2000 Trail Boss being a little slow on the top end (slower than usual.....). Last night I was doing maintenance on it, and discovered the air filter (K&N) was pretty nasty. I thought the K&N was supposed to work better when a little dirty. Anyway, I replaced it with a paper filter and then changed the plug. The plug was pretty black, not the tan color it is supposed to be. In fact, it looked a little wet, but couldn't tell (my hands were greasy).

Could a dirty air filter resemble a rich-running quad, turning the plug black, and losing top end speed (less air flow at higher RPM)? It would seem to me that it would, because there is more gas than air is being provided. I haven't had the chance to take the quad out and test it yet (can't ride here in the ol' subdivision).

A few years ago I had a Banshee that I had mod'd so much that the wife was about to kick me out the door if I spent another penny on it. When I could no longer feel my eye ***** bouncing off my ears on the top end, I knew it was time to clean the K&N and change the plugs.

I had to choose between the Banshee or the Wife...... well, I'm still married, but sure miss the Banshee.
