A newbie rider here with a Recon is looking to upgrade. I've been riding for only a month or two (a lot of fire-road trails and dunes) and had my first taste of a sport machine in a 400EX. I like the handling and power (especially in the dunes), but with only a month's worth of experience, would a 400ex or 300ex be the next logical upgrade?

If you've driven a 400EX without problems, then you're ready to own one. Its a very forgiving machine, reguardless of your experience level. I drove my 400EX at the Glamis dunes last April and had a ball. Looking forward to this winter.

KidNovice,

As your riding partner, and the one who gave you your first taste of a real sport machine, you know we've discussed this issue in great detail over the past few weeks. Whether or not you can handle the 400EX is not an issue, and as "azrob" stated, it is an extremely forgiving machine due to it's broad powerband and predictable handling characteristics. Having said that though, we both know the power of the 400EX is something to be reckoned with, and can quickly turn into too much of a machine in the wrong hands. So could you hop on a 400EX tomorrow and ride it to it's full potential? No, and neither can I with about nine months of riding experience and owning a 400EX for almost four months. But given your experience level at this point, the same can probably be said for the 300EX as well.

The question to ask yourself though, is where do "you" want to be (riding experience wise) a year from now, and what machine do you want to be riding? If you're going to be a trail rider then the Recon is fine, but if you mainly ride trails mixed with dunes and jumping, then the 300EX might be the ticket. But if you want a full blown machine that can ride trails and hang with the best of them, with an awesome suspension and a good amount of available power, then the 400EX is the answer.

At any rate, since there seems to be some hesitation on your part, you might want to thoroughly test both machines before making a decision--that way you won't be buying the wrong machine. BTW, Pismo rents 300EX's and you know where you can find a 400EX to test ride...
