What will happen?

Depends on the conditions. In minnesota we have snowblowers and snowmobiles that dont have air cleaners... thats not a big deal in winter, theres no dust or dirt to inhale.
But if its dusty, and it usually is, if youre following another quad, itll scratch the innards of the motor, rings, pistons, cylinder walls, and it wont be long and all your compression will be gone.

If its black because of oil, then it could be a symtom of a worn out motor. I would do a compression test, and see how much you got. You realisticly need 80 psi or more.
Does the motor smoke? what color is the smoke? If its blue, its oil .If its black or grey then its too rich. If its too rich...the float could be too high, or the jetting is too rich.
You say it idles, how is the rest of the rpm range? Missing, sputtering, bogging? Backfireing?
