Default questions about changing the head gaskit on a big red?????

has anybody changed a head gaskit on a bigred 250es . can you just undo the bolts take it out and put a new one on, or do you have to unconnect the valve rods or take out the motor . and when you put a new one do you have to use RTV . and i am afraid that the bolts will strip out the threds because that happen to me when i changed the oil .

i did it on a 200 big red. i dont think (not sure) you have to take the engine out, just pull the head and see if you ahve enough room. you shouldnt have to use RTV, it should be fine by itself

are the bolts rusted in or just been on there a while? take it sloooowwwww when taking them out or get them part way out and use some penetrating oil on the exposed threads to make the job easier- just my .02- good luck, keep the classics running!

Is your head gasket leaking oil or losing compression.

i guess it depends how badly stripped the threads are, if they arent bad, run a tap down the hole (exact same size) to clean the threads out, Im not familiar enough with the bigred to know how its put together on the top side. If the threads come out with the head bolts, a machine shop could advise you on a helicoil to replace the missing threads. I used a helicoil with jb-weld, liquid cold weld, on a stripped rear end alignment hole on my old yamaha 200 tri-moto. good luck!

I have changed a head gasket on my buddies bigred and we did not take of the engine,
it's a tight fit to get off, but saves time. All you have to do is remove old gasket, clean the
area where gasket goes and pu new one on and be sure to torque the bolts.
