The ES uses the same transmission of the S models. It is just the shifting that is electronic. If there is a problem with the electrics, the tool kit has a lever that allows the transmission to be put in gear manually so you can get home.
I have found the transmission and shifting to be reliable on my ES Foreman. I really like it.

Good point snowbuster.
Ive got a 2001 Rancher 2wd. Never had the first problem until just a few days ago. If I could go back in time, I would have never bought the es model. Its great when it works, but I think I'm about to start paying for getting the coolest think I had seen.

We have not had any problems with ours, but we only have 1200 miles on it. Why get power steering on a new car, it could spring a leak and quit working. Manual steering is a lot less troublesom. Why do some people even buy ATV's? They could just walk and not ever have to worry about t an ATV breaking down. The lever in the trunk is a "shifter". It is provided to get it into neutral so you can start it and into a gear so it will get you home. It does not turn the ES into an S.

yeap , Specta is right on.....again.
ES on the rancher is the lasy man's shifter, or in my case because I stand on the pegs more than sitting( well may be not),
but it sure comes handy being able to shift on the handlebar when you need to balance and keep the feet on the pegs.
I bet my "ars" there is 95 % ES ranchers on the market now and only 5% Standard
same thing with power stering vs. muscle steer on cars.
why not get the good stuf?
