first quad for wife (need advice)
#1
Im looking for something that will fit her small size, 5ft. tall about 100pounds. She wont need four wheel drive and she doesnt need to run 60mph. However, i would like to be able to play on it from time to time. Im 5'10" 150pounds. We wont be in knee high mud, just trail riding in the woods. Im leaning towards a 250ex. By the way i usually ride red, but i wouldnt rule out any of the others. Whatcha think?

Yup - 250EX or Z250. Depending on her riding attitude you may find that she'll like the sport more if she can stay drier out on the trails. In that case: Recon or Ozark.

The first quad that came to mind was the 250ex. But, this would give you the opportunity to get her/yourself a second quad that you would like. Then she could ride your Rincon. It's just a thought.
I've considered getting a second quad (like a 250ex or something). The 250ex would be a good quad for kids to grow into. I just picture rarely needing two quads at one time. So I would be using each quad more from time to time. So why not get something that you'd enjoy like a 300ex, 400ex or even a 450R? Then like I wrote, she could ride the Rincon. Bad idea? Too selfish? I guess it depends on how often you'll be riding together and if she would really like a quad specifically for herself. I guess even a 350lb 250ex could be a fun change when your used to riding a 600lb machine.

philjo, I think you couldn't go wrong with a Z400, easy to learn to shift, got reverse, good suspesion, I she won't be tired of it in two months, plus you love it when you ride it. And with the new Honda 450 there should be alot of used Z's out there soon so will come down in price. Ride one if you can before you decide. I tought my girlfriend on one and she had never riden a quad before, easy to control. She's 5'4".Hope this helps.

If you want a 2x4 then the 250ex would be fine. So if you want sport go with the 250ex. But if you need a little extra power, then a 400ex is VERY nice.
But if you would take a utility, then she might like it better. It has been said "she might like auto tranny" Ya, I would get her one so that she would like ATV's more, and maybe let you buy more toys!!! (ATV's)
But the of the utility quad that I would recomend...well, theres lots...the first that comes to mind is the...
Rancher ES (maybe 4x4, but more money thats not needed of her) (it only goes 50MPH but that WAY good enough for her...I think)
Or maybe a new yamaha 350 (Brune I think) those things look very nice.
But drive her to the closes dealer and see what she likes.
Hope this helps...

Hondabuster, sorry to burst your reply but I just moved from a 250EX to a Warrior 350 and I wish I would have started learning on a clutch to begin with because I am retraining myself to use the foot brake and not the clutch for a brake! Also, if I would have started on a clutch I would have been in a Z400 by now instead of a Warrior. But don't get me wrong, I am loving my Warrior(for a few years until my daughter or son grows into it!). Also, I kind felt the 250EX wasn't powerful enough for me after awhile.
Philjo - do you think your wife will want to move up? All the bigger sport quads (except the Polaris 500) are clutch and if she starts out on a clutch it will give her more confidence when she moves up. My family trail rides often and we ride the dunes one to two times a year. I just took my new quad out yesterday in the trails (with my family) and I loved shifting but I really got to work on my starting in first gear. Also to let you know, with the Warrior, the foot rests are up higher than on a 250EX if she is shorter. (At first I argued with my hubby that the Warrior was shorter than the 250EX so we measured the seat the fender and the foot rests!) Let her in on the decision - it will be her quad primarily. Research together. Good luck!
