Increasing Raptor HP after Pipe and KNN?
#1
I would like to hear from those of you that have tried different ways to increase hp and quick rev ability on Raptor's. I currently have a raptor that doesn't have the best set-up in the world but has a Big Gun, KNN basic set-up. For around $200-300 dollars as to what would be the best way to increase the revability and bump up the hp by maybe 5hp. Would it be worth it to go with a higher compression piston? or just maybe get a port/polish job? Any other options that I may be forgetting.

Gearing will help alot from the factory they are to high geared go to a 12 tooth front other than that I would rejet it that will help alot since you have a pipe and kn that really need to be done. Do not by a jet kit they are like 80 bucks find out on here what sizes you need to go to and pick them up at your local shop for less then ten more than likely.

I may fiddle with the jetting, and I actually kind of like the gearing the way it is. It's a 02 model. Just wondering if you have any other suggestions or directions I shoud go next...

After taking a very long time and a lot of effort to dial in my raptor i would suggest that you try the following.Remove your air box lid and jet your carb accordingly-use as low an octane level on your fuel as you can without pinging-make sure you have your gearing set up to achieve maximium performance in the conditions that you ride the most. These things along with a higher compression of probably 11:1 will make a huge difference with a minimal amount of money.I have a raptor with a 102mm(686) 11:1 piston with a pro design air filter and a fmf pipe and i find very few four strokes that can beat me in a drag race and if they do it is not by much.I mention how well my raptor does because it has come a long way from what it was when i first had it built through a lot of tweaking and it has paid off.I have raced some raptors with a lot more mods than me and have beat many and i have lost to a few but i am always in the race and my weight of 260 lbs that is not too bad.If you go to a higher compression i would not automatically assume that you need "race gas" because i found my biggest gains with my raptor were found with the proper amount of octane which was much lower than i had thought.

I'm curious is the 11:1 basically a stand alone mod? Meaning you can get away with just adding the piston...
Also, I do worry about reliability as well and thats why I dropped my 18cc domes on banshee back down to 21cc domes.
But I had the stock bore so never have really had to much experience with higher compression pistons. I presume you can just use the stock bore, maybe rehone the cyclinder and slap the newer 11:1 compression piston in. How much performance improvement did it make for you? Also, can I continue to use 93 octane with the 11:1?

Yes CC you can do just that with the stock bore BUT always have it bored to match even the stock bore piston. Buy while your there I'd throw atleast a stage 1 Hotcam to increase your reving and both will give you a nice increase.

I also have an 02, and with a lot of gearing changes I am most satisfied with the way I have it set up now. 12 in the front, 38 in in the rear. My stock tires are still in good shape and don't spin a lot, so the bike hooks up well but still revs fast. Good combination. Removing the airbox lid entirely is a good suggestion, I have done this as well. What type of K&N do you have? Foam or screened? I believe Hyper sells an aluminum airbox for the Raptor that is designed to accept Honda's 250R filter, which you know is much bigger and breaths a lot better. With the lid removal or new box, you have to rejet. I actually recommend Yammy's jet kit. It gives you a few options and includes everything, including extra needle clips (in case you bend one) and pilots. I got a good deal, but I frequent my dealer regularly. I'm sure you do as well looking at your banshee mods...anyways.
You also might want to consider a mild cam. So the cam and the jetting might run you just over $200, depending where you go. My piston is still stock though, and I'm unfamiliar with how increased compression would increase revability (i've never ridden a high compression 4 stroke, just a two). I would tell you my jetting, but that's a trade secret. You could also go the route of trying FCR carbs. Not sure how well these would work with a stock motor, though. Good luck.

I'm at this mod point as well.
So can i juist get a 10:75 to 11:1 piston and, a cam and, pop them in and, go?
Also what is the difference between stage 1 and, 2 of the cams besides you need new springs for stage 2?

Theres no just poping them in you MUST bore even your stock bore to fit your new piston. Going to have to jet up also! The stage 2 will have way more topend but requires porting to get the real benifit! I built my motor with stock bore JE12.1 piston hotcam stage 1 heavy porting with 3 angle valve job and Sparks full exhaust raptor adaptor with 2 banshee filters and dynojet kit and the bike was very fast but if I were to do it again I'd get the stage 2 because my bike wanted more revs that the stage 1 couldn't give.

PatsRaptor - Who did your porting? How much is it?
Would I be close if i assume $135 for a Stage 2 cam, $150 for a JE 11:1 piston, $160 for heavier Kibble/white valve springs springs, and, $50 for the gaskets plus porting and, i'd be done? About $495 for parts - Taken from a Craycraft site i saw. They don't have a price for porting.
What does a valve job do and, do i need one one w/ the porting?
I'm ok w/ wrenches do you think i can do it myself if i get the porting done?
