Default 1/4 mile gearing?

what kind of gearing should should I be running in a 1/4 mi. I am running a tm 45 with no lid, rwr cdi, billet end cap . I got spanked by a 400 z with a pipe and cams should that be happening? also this is on ice.

Z-400's hook up a lot better than a DS. Surely that's what happened.

I would think that stock gearing would be hard to beat since you have a RWR cdi.

1/4 mile is a long way, I would say get a 17 or 18 front sprocket and give it a try. The desert racing DS run something like 17/38 gearing and do better than 90mph. If you have the factory CDI your losing allot on top as well. The stock gearing will be tapped out before you get to half track. You'll be accelerating slower but you'll make up for it on the big end. There is a gearing calculator on the net for a DS if someone has the link...

Did he pull away at the start or did he come around you on top?

My DS will just sit there and spin on itself without moving an inch on ice with any amount of gas. You need to feather it real slow to get moving....and even then it spins freely. So if I was to race anything on ice I'd lose.....

You need proper tires and studs.

i am running a 18 /40 gearing with 244 ice studs per tire in the rear, and 180 per tire in the front. but traction is still some what of a problem. i am also running a rwr cdi.

that is a possibilty. i also was going to try more studs. i am not as worried about the ice as much as i am getting beat in the summer, by my buddy with the z 400. so i hope it is just a traction prob that i can take care of in the summer. i beat him bad last summer when he was just piped. but since,he has put cams in and that made a big differnce, and that is when he beat me on the ice. i can,t let it happan again or i will never hear the end of if. since i rode him all last summer that he spanked!

So is he beating you off the line or is he going by you on top???

If it's off the line then it probably is traction, if he's running by you on top then maybe the gearing or maybe he did more than cams...but a 1/4 mile is a very long drag race for a quad..
