Best sand tire for 04 Baja X?
#1
I'm going to pick up my new Baja X tomorrow morning and was wondering if anybody could recommend a sand tire? Do all the DS650's have the same bolt pattern for the rims? I've ridden an '85' 350X since I bought it new and this is my first Quad. My buddy has an Alba Raptor with their Stage III kit. I will be looking forward to getting some upgrades and whooping his behind. Any quick and easy mods for some HP gains? Now if I can just get to sleep tonight!!!!!!!!

I'm getting STU Razorbacks up front with STU Sand Skate II s on the rear. I'm waiting for my rims, as I ordered special DS rims from Douglas at $30 extra a piece, and a 5-6 week wait. (for the extra charge, you wouldfigure I would get them quicker.)
I'm going with a 10 X 7 front and a 10 X 10 rear rims. (they only make 10 X 6 fronts and 10 X 9 rears for the DS, hence the speacial order price)
The extra width will "square off" the tire profile providing more floatation and better handling. (at least it did for my Banshee, so I'm hoping it will be the same for my DS)

I'm getting the 20" X 11" X 10" rear STU Sand Skate IIs and the 21" X 8" X 10" front STU Razorbacks...There IS a difference between good quality rubber used in STU tires and the cheaper compounds used by other companies. From my observations using many differnt types of sand tires, and watching many others tire, the STUs are worth the money...
As for my new DS, I only put an hour on it while breaking it in at the dunes. I had no paddles and couldn't run higher rpms. Plus, I haven't had time to dial in my suspension and probably will have to get heavier springs as I weigh 300+. I plan on putting 10+ hours on it stock before making any mods.
The DS650 is probably the BEST stock quad made for dunes/desert riding. Every time I look at it I notice more quality features that came with the stock bike that other manufacturers don't include. The stock DS performs bettert han a stock Banshee.
BUT, I compared to my extensively modified Banshee, the DS falls short. But I have spent about 6 years and many thousands of dollars dailing in my Banshee. So, I plan on spending several years and several thousands of dollars to perfect my DS. It will take time as is seems like the 2004 DS is so much different than the previous DSs that non one really knows what will work best. But, no more pre-mixing and I get lights that never dim when the rpms lag, which is good as I noght ride a lot.
I will continue to peruse this board, hoping to find ideas that work. I really like the MRHP endcap but is is not usable in the dunes due to the noise restrictions and not in the forests due to no spark arrester. I hope the LTE pipe will be good for the DS. I plan on a Vortex CDI box, K & N air filter, ported intake, hopefully fuel injection in the future - if not than a carb, and some type of pipe, and 4 HID lights.

azsandrider,
I just ordered a set of 20x10x10s Haulers for my '04 DS. I'm a large rider too and figured that would be a good combo. I don't really use the top end in 5th gear so can afford to trade top end speed for low end power. I've got a new sprocket coming for the front but don't know if I'll need it or not.

400catdriver, I have 20x10x10 haulers 7 paddle on mine. I'm over 300lbs. with my gear. I'm real happy with them. With that in mind the 7 paddles are great for dune riding, helps promote some wheel spin to keep on top for us heavier riders, but they lose a little bit on hill racing. If I could do it over again I would go with 20x11x9 Extreme Grip 8 paddle. Just my opinion, right, wrong, or indifferent.
