Default TRX-YFZ rider review

went iding in cloughs state park in NH with a couple of buddies. One of them just picked up his TRX and he wanted to ride and swap quads. we were riding snow packed trails so we decided to pass on the drag race and see how they handled in the trails.

both machines are completely stock. the TRX had the Baffle removed...while the YFZ's was still installed. the trails are nasty...whoops throughout. the suspension on both machines handled well. about an hour in and the TRX pulls over for an inspection on a vibration-rattling noise. turns out to be the heat shield for the header pipe. we remove and continue.

we flew through the trails. it was'nt long before we rolled both machines (no babying these machines). both incidents were due to catching the edge of the deep snow at high speed resulting in the quads flipping and the TRX and the YFZ now had bent handle bars...the graphics on the YFZ shattered off the rear fenders like broken glass and of course, light blue stress marks were left as a reminder. the TRX palstics were unbleamished.

we decided to take them to the powerlines where we could open em up more, jump and hit some hill climbs. despite earlier concerns of re-kicking a stalled honda. forget them. it re-started with 1 or 2 kicks everytime.

after we ran both machines hard as we could. we swapped.

the feel
I like the TRX alot. the ergonomics are very diffrent. after riding the YFZ allday...my *** thanked me for trying the Honda. it's very comfortable. Honda folks are gonna hate this...but it felt like i was on a stock raptor or a z400. i was comfortable standing or sitting. where as the YFZ...you have to stand. the ergonomics insist you to stay in the attck postion.

the Power
the Honda's power came on smooth. with a little jerk the front end lofted up nicely. it did'nt leap skyward like a raptor. we all agreed the YFZ by comparison feels like a 2 stroke. it hits hard and has a stronger mid range.

both machines are jumping champs. landings are a joy.

i could go on and on...so i'll just let you guys ask the questions you want answers to. i'll just end it by saying both machines are awesome. i'd be happy to own or race either. you'll definately be alot more comfortable on the TRX when riding for long stretches. you must ride the YFZ hard to fully appreciate it. if your the guy who likes to ride all-out and through the toughest stuff. the YFZ will keep you smiling.

I ride all out and hard a lot, but I also like to just cruise and enjoy the senery, do you think one machine would have an advantage on the other for what I like to do? I was thinking of the trx because of the comfort of the occasional 'slow' ride.

Motox26 & blaster2fast: if i ocassionaly rode track but trail rode more often...i'd get the Honda. on the other hand..if i rode dunes more often or rode in pits. i'd go for the YFZ for it's ability to rev up and rip like a two stroke.

either machine will handle great in any of these catergories...but i'll list what i feel would be the best.

MX: YFZ
GNCC: either (TRX for comfort in a 2hr race and The YFZ for it's suspensions ability to suck up anything thrown at it)
Trail: TRX
Desert: TRX
Dunes: YFZ
TT: YFZ
ICE: YFZ
Drag: either

one thing i forgot to mention. when we got into trails that were'nt packed down by sleds. the TRX kept getting stuck. i think it had more to do with the swingarm skid. bit the YFZ never got stuck but then again the YFZ has a tiny swingarm skid.

I wrote a similiar rider review in the honda forum. Its titled "trx450 review from a yfz owner" Check it out. I also said that the trx reminded me a lot of a z400.

wow, there are alot of similarities in our posts. cool.

the one thing we did'nt agree on was which quad sat higher. it felt like the TRX sat a litlle higher to me and my buddy said the YFZ sat higher. it could just be the feel of where the pegs and handle bars are.

now my biggest problem is....I want both. wait til the wife hears that.

the yfz definately sits lower. I think the seat is 1 and a half inches closer to the ground then the trx.

It looks like the guy who torqued the heat shield bolts down was sleeping because the same thing happened on a new 450r I rode last week.

Its refreshing to hear a quad review besides the typical "Quad XX sucked and quad YY kicks a$$". I am looking forward to riding both, cant wait.
