Melting Grizzly Headlights
#1
I have an 03 Grizzly that has a problem keeping the headlights in the socket. When it was only about 1 week old I was riding at night and the headlights went out. Upon further inspection I realized that the bulbs had fallen into the lens. I took it to the dealer and they said it was because the switch was on between both high and low beam at the same time and the bulbs heated up to much and it melted the ring off of the bulb that keeps it in the light socket. I understood, but now less than a year later I had another bulb melt out of the socket again and I know the switch has never been in-between at all since the first incident. Just wandering if anyone else has heard of this. Thanks.

I would definitely look for a short within the headlight itself. Is there a chance that the bulb isn't lining up good with the contacts and could be arcing across the bulb's metal casing. This is very peculiar and I haven't heard of anyone having this problem. Please let us know what you find out.

12 volts DC will not arc. However there could be a loose connection that is heating up enough to cause a problem. Check for the fit of the bulb and check the electrical contacts too. Some time ago I remember reading a post that had the same problem, I think the solution was to use a different manfactuer for the bulb.

Thanks Vakero, I will check the connections and have also thought about using a different brand bulb. Maybe now I will. Do you know anything about the PIAA 35 watt extreme white bulbs.

its a pretty common problem on a couple different yamaha quads, mostly Wolverines, but I believe they are all the same bulb from yamaha. There have been a couple posts about this a little while ago, I believe one of them had a solution but I cant remember what it was.

The problem is all in the switch.Even if you are sure the switch was not inbetween low/high beam there is still a problem. What happens is that internally the contacts/switch become out of line.Meaning the adjustment for low / high beam contacts are no longer lined up.This can happen from rolling quad over and maybe putting to much pressure on switch or just a poor setup from the factory. If you are having problems with bulbs melting just pull apart your switch housing and make sure everything is lining up properly.
