What are some cheap mods for a 85 big red?
#1
I need some ideas on some cheap mods i can do to get more hp out of my big red. I mean its nice right now but i really really want some more power, are there any mods that'll greatly increase my power without pouring tons of money into it? Thanks.

I pulled the lid off the air box today and I gotta say... Holy Crap what a difference. This thing will haul and has lots more hp's this way. I was looking at my buddies DS 650 and it has large holes drilled in the top of the box. I don't ride under water, so I will be drilling holes in the lid tonight. It does make it a bit louder though. If you want pep for little of nothing, go to your local salvage yard and yank the cam and rockers from a 250SX.
The 250SX cam is a popular mod for the TRX300 guys as well. It has more duration and lift and IS a noticable gain on a 250ES and TRX300 engine.
I say to get the rockers too because it is unsafe to run a used cam with rockers that have been mated to another cam on these engines. You might could get by with no problems, but it's cheap insurance.
Web still lists a cam for these engines too if you prefer to buy new.
There are many other companies out there as well since the same cam for a TRX 300 utility works in the 250ES and SX models.

Hey Knows, i just did that on a trx 300. Had a galled head, replaced it with one from a 250sx. I'm assuming it is a 250 sx head because it is black. Anyway my dilemma is this; the 300 runs good, but not like it did. Did a compression check.......150. Specs are 178 to 206. The parts head came with the cam and sprocket. The timing mark on the 300 cam sprocket is directly above the bolt hole. The sx sprocket mark is 3 teeth to the right of the bolt hole. I used the 300 sprocket, and had the valves checked, all sealed off, and none were bent. What did I do wrong?
