My buddy who has one hasn't fouled a plug in 2 years, and fouling plugs is the only thing I would have against a 2-stroke. His is quiet, extremely powerful, and doesn't smoke much due to using Polaris Gold Premium synthetic oil. It is an excellent bike, and if I could find one in good condition, I'd buy it in a heartbeat!!!!!!

Mine smokes a little on start-up. However so does all my friends 4-strokes.

The Explorers are 2 stroke. I got Polaris Sport last year, and like you I was a little hesitant about a 2 stroke. But after reading this form, and asking a lot of questions, I was satisfied that it would fit my needs. and it has, I love my bike, just wish I'd spent the extra to get the 4x4. I wouldn't let the "2 stoke" stop me from a good deal.

That is what makes it good that 2 stroke 400 is a really great motor. Strong and reliable. It is quieter than the 250 2 stroke that was in my Xplorer 250 4x4.

I told ya once and I will tell you again, I owned a 1996 Sportsman 400 4x4 until 2 weeks ago when I sold it. I believe it is probably the best 2 stroke machine I have ever owned and you would ever own. It muds like a king and works like a horse.

The 400 motor is one of the best motors Polaris has. It's full of power and very reliable. Sure thay may smell about 5% stronger than a new, I repeat new, four stroke but it's not like a snowmobile or anything...

I love 2-strokes. It's only when I started reading these forums that they started to scare me a bit. Once I got back on my 2 strokers...the fear was replaced by "why the hell was I scared in the first place??"

I know six guys with Polaris 2-stroke 400s. One guy has a '95 400 2x4 LT. has changed the belt this summer, thats all. It's one of those old red and blue bikes with racks, it's not real easy on the eyes, but it hauls butt.

I have one in the garage right now, a 95' 2-stroke 400 Sportsman. I bought mine used for $2400 last fall. Boy, have I learned a lot since then! This was my first quad, I was not prepared to look for all of the problem areas that can bite you after the sale. I did have to spend some money to rebuild the motor, replace the rear axle bearings, front brakes, and still have to replace the rear swing arm bushings and rebuild a brake caliper ( my fault to much mud). I would look very carefully at the quad before buying, take some one with you to have a second look ( we all get a little excited). After all was done I still only have about $3500 in the quad, that includes a plow bracket( for a home adapted garden tractor plow ), a winch, all new tires, metal hand guards, and a new rear wheel (I broke the factory one mudding). I do not want to make this sound all bad. I WOULD NOT GET RID OF MY POLARIS QUAD. I even bought one for my wife, a 99' 250 Trail Boss (also a 2 stroke). I have had my 400 up to 60 on the speed-o, in mud up to the fenders and snow over the fenders. I can mud better than my buddies 450 Honda, plows better ( no shifting and easier to reverse) and has longer travel suspension (for a better ride).
GO BUY THE QUAD and have some fun!
