The engine takes 2 quarts of oil when you do an oil change, no more, no less. To check the oil properly, according to the service manual, park it on level ground, let it idle for 5 minutes to warm up, then shut it off, and a minute or two later check the oil by unscrewing the dipstick, wipe it off, then re-insert the dipstick WITHOUT screwing it in, pull it back out, and it should read in the cross-hatched area. If it's too full, you run the risk of blowing out a seal somewhere. If it's not full enough, you know what that can do.

On a new bike or a fresh rebuild the manuals say to add more oil . Check your manual for the correct oil measurement.

According to the service manual page 3-1:

Engine Oil Capacity: After draining/filter change: 1.95 US qt. (after disassembly: 2.3 qt)

1.95 quarts is what my 400EX took on its first oil change. I did just what the service manual stated.
