Sport vs. Utility?? (I am stumped)
#1
Hi, ok, most people know that I have lots of dreams!!!
But I need to get a ATV, but I am stuped on deciding to get the right one. I thought I wanted a utility ATV, until I looked at those sick 450's. And now I want a fast quad. Ok, I have 3 acers, and I have some use for a utility ATV, but I think a sport is more my type. But all you utility and sports owners tell me which you like better? The reason I have not gotten a wheeler yet is because I am makeing money, and I am in a hole with this decision. Do sport ATVs do eveything that a utility would? (I know thats a dumb question) like can you trailride with those sport quads? I am a teen and I would be mostly doing sporty riding, but I am not sure whats for me? I think to most things that I would be doing with my quad is (maybe racing soon) trail ridding, and some mud. And I think a sport ATV like a (yfz450, trx450, 400ex, raptor...so on) can have fun in my mud holes, and get out? right?
Well, all help is thanked in advanced. THANKS!

sport or utility, the wolverine has pleanty of both.
i would strongly recomend you take a look at the wolverine if you cant decide. the wolverine is reliable, quick for its size, and handles great like a sport. it has the 4x4 so you can go anywher and the suspention to jump. the wolverine is pretty quick with the addition of a simple pipe. and will go places you wouldnt dream of going with a sport quad. I feel that it would suit you just fine
utilities or sport/utilities will do more than a sport quad the wolverine has thee best of both worlds. anay mudholes on a sport will be tough, you have to get a good run wich isnt always possible, if you want to make it to the other cide.

I really have to have BOTH. Out in the open desert, the utilities are pretty much worthless. You are bashing big desert whoops, and you need big aftermarket sport quad suspension if you aren't going to be tortured all day. Sure you can find some technical ute riding if you go looking for it, but you will be riding at the back of the pack all day, eating everybody's dust!
In the mountains on the other hand, the sport bikes don't have the high ground clearance to get through the big rocks. Plus, there are a lot of water crossings where shaft drive is a big plus. And, it never hurts to have 4wd.
Maybe get a sport bike now. Then get a ute later on, and have the best of both worlds!

Thanks again Trevor, and Wayne. I guess I will loook at the wolve this weekend, but I think I might just do like Wayne said and get a little of both worlds. I think I might (for now anyways) get a sport quad (becuase I will only be racing and trail ridding) because of the things I would use it for. Now, you must understand that if I got a utility, I would not be racing it but if I get a sport, I am going to race it...hehe... But I hope that if I get a sport I will not be disapointed. What I am looking for in a wheeler is sporty, fast, great trail rider. Oh, and I could use 4x4 somtimes, but I don't have to have it. (Maybe I should just get a TRX450R 4x4!!!! ) Just kidding...
But I still want all your opinions...I need all the help I can get.

ilike the sport atv's i had a utility before. it just wasn't fun for the trails. o bought the 300ex which is a sport and i love it. the only way i could see getting a utility is for work or mudding or hunting. otherwise if it is just for trailriding get a sport atv.

I had a sport quad, sold it to buy my Grizzly. I bought the grizzly because everyone I rode with rode 4x4s. I could go where they did with the exception of the mud. I also like to hunt and the utility aspect came into play there also, I love my grizzly but I sure to miss having a sport also , I am trying to save up more money so I can have both but I have a baby on the way so that cuts that out. But whe wolvie is a good choice the prairie is another as well as a scrambler.

take a look at the bombardier outlander 400 ho 4x4 . it is like the wolvarine a great combo of sport and ute . then outi has far more sport than ute . a top speed of 61 to 63 mph the smoothest ride on the market . and it will smoke the wolvarine !!! it will run with or beet any 500cc sport ute and the warenty is awsome !!!!!

Just to keep the playing field level, let me say this. I have a ranch in the desert and an area south of my property that is 23 miles by (roughly) 20 miles wide that is desert wilderness as my personal playground. We work, trail ride, explore ghost town ruins, and prospect for gold, mineral, gemstones, and meteorites.
To a man, every rider except one (my son in law) comes out there with a Utility ATV because that far out in the desert you need to carry "extras". There are no phones, no rangers, no roads, no nothin' except yourself - and partner, you need to be prepared hump your own gear to take care of yourself: somthing a bit harder to do on a sport with no racks. My son in law came out once with a Sport. It's great for jumping around and playing in the beach dunes with the kiddies, but as a serious desert quad, it just don't make it - and my SIL has never been back.
Sports do have their place and many ride them on short "kiddy jaunts" in the desert, but for serious trail riding, exploring, hunting, remote lake fishing expeditions, prospecting, ranching, and farming....... I'll take a Ute anyday and everytime.
But I'm just an old guy, so you think about it and then make up your own mind. You have to do what YOU think is best for you and then live with your decision.
FWIW, I really like my Rancher 4x4 ES. I'd like to add another for ranch guests to ride but I suspect it'll have to be a Recon ES primarily becasue of the cost difference.
I hope this provided you with something to think about.

Have you looked into the Polaris Scramblers??? Selectable 2/4wd (with TRUE 4wd), good suspension travel, auto trans which is VERY tuneable, available in a 500cc 4 stroke or 400cc 2 stroke. The 400 can be fitted with tons of different mods and is capable of producing OVER 85hp. Both can be fitted with racks front and rear, a hitch, even a snow plow and windshield if so desired. A perfect combo of sport and utiliy. Plus, you can find used ones for a good price.
