What to look for when buying used (2 Stroke)?
#1
I am looking at a 2000 xplorer tomorrow. I was wanting to know what to look for when buying a used 2 stroke. I am not going to be able to take the quad to a shop to test compression, but what can I look for and listen for that will tell me how good a shape the motor is in? It is an Xplorer 400. I like this engine, I used to have a scram 400 and it is the same engine.
Thanks

I would see if the stock piston has been replaced or not. If it hasnt then a rebuild will be in store not too far down the road or else your setting on a time bomb with the stock 400 piston. If it has, then a slight bit of piston rattle or noise will be normal with the wiseco due to increased tolerance. It is the same motor as the scammy had. Good luck,Bubba

if the stock piston blowes does that mean that the quad is totaled????
or does it just mean that its time to find a wiscoe
im with ced on the counterbalance thing i looked at 2 before i bought mine and all 3 had leaking counterbalances

No the quad will not be totaled. What happens is the skirt will crack then eventually break off and guess where the pieces go,yep into the bottom. So it is very good insurance to replace the stock one with a new one.
