Default ATV for 12 year old?

My son is 12 and has been riding dirt bikes for 4 years. He has currently been riding a KX85 for the last year and a half. I would like to get him a sport quad. Something with decent suspension that he can play with on the MX track. He won't be racing the ATV, just playing. I'd also like it to be a 4-stroke.

I started researching what's available and their seems to be a big gap between kid and adult ATV's. The kid ATV's appear to have too little power and suspension for an experienced 12 year old. My son is 5 foot 2 and 90 lbs.

I've been looking at the Honda Sportrax TRX250EX. This seems to be the smallest of the full-size, sport ATV's.

Any comments on that choice - or any other recommendations?

Thanks! Mark

For a 12 year-old with four years riding experience, a 250EX or Z-250 would suit him fine.

The 250's are great bikes. But, if he is willing to shift a fully manual hand clutch, he (and you!) will have more fun on a Blaster (cheaper too!).

I would look into a blaster(two-stroke) or a 250ex. If he can ride and clutch then look into the 300ex. Its much better than the 250ex.

Thanks for the advice! Sounds like a 250 or 300 will work well for him. We sat on them at the dealers and they seem big, but I guess he'll get used to that. I like the idea of an adult-sized quad because I'll be able to ride it, too!

The 300EX seems like a much better sport quad than the 250EX - better suspension, carb, etc. I'm going to consider that as well.

Thanks again! Mark

My suggestion would be something like a warrior. It may be a little big but he wouldn't grow out of it for quite some time and it's not too powerful.

Alos it would be a good idea because you could buy mine. It's currently for sale. hahahhaa

On a more serious note, I see you live in Lawrenceville. I'm in Augusta. You ever been riding at Durhamtown?

I think he'd have most fun on a blaster, but if it has to be a four stroke and he's pretty good the new yfz 450. but if you think its to much for him the z250.

mi friends has a blaster that is 03 he has had more problems with it than mi 1977 pe250. pluse the blasteris to small for mim i am 13 and i am 5ft10in and it is way to small but great speed. mi friend is as tall as me and he is getin a raptor 350. it is the same as the worrier but liter and sport plastices it comes out next month so i would think about that too.

My son wants the 250EX but I'm not sure it's sporty enough with its shaft drive, etc. When I suggest anything bigger - like the 300EX - he thinks that it will be too much to handle. He thinks they will have a hit like the 2-stroke MX bikes he's used to. I'm thinking that an air-cooled 4-stroke pulling the extra weight of an ATV will have a nice smooth powerband with an abundance of torque.

He sat on a Blaster this weekend and it fit him well, but we really don't want a 2-stroke.

Thanks for all the suggestions! Sounds like there's a lot of other choices than the 250/300EX. I need to keep researching.

de8212: Never been to Durhamtown. Heard it has some good trails but the MX track is mediocre.
