Default Do I have to remove the motor?

Changing rings or maybe piston. Can I do it without removing motor? I remember a post about guys not using the top motor mount or grinding it down. Any help would be great.

Check my picture page to see where to grind away at the upper motor mount on the head. On the frame crossmember you will want to grind a little away from the lower front portion of the mount.

I (like some others) have completely removed the middle portion of the cross member and don't use an upper motor mount anymore. The FCR's fit much easier that way!

I did my piston and did not remove the motor. YOu just need to grind the top motor mount a bit.. I still use the mount I just took about .250 off the b bottom edge so the head slides off.

No STOP! no grinding needed when we put my new piston in all i had to do is take all the motor mounts off including there brackets excep the very bottom rear motor mount and i just leaned the motor foward and the head and jug came off very easy and when i put the ds back together i forgot the very top motor mount and just left it off

Do not grind anything

Grinding is fine..
Just cover your motor... that way you dont have to tilt your motor..
Both ways work JUST FINE... I found the grind VERY VERY easy and the motor mount still works fine. Others like Biggerisbetter simply cut the upper support bracket out..
Grinding does not remove any integrity.

Heya Tim,

I removed mine with the motor in and needed no grinding. Just took the rear upper and front lower engine mount loose and tilted it foreward. If ya wanna see, i can take a pic. Mines been that way for 9 months...

Well I just did mine, I removed the front 2 motor mount bolts and the top rear motor mount bolt, leaveing one rear bottom motor mount bolt. The motor tilted forward and the head came off rather easy. Took about 10 mins to remove the 3 motor mounts. (it's a 03 though older quads might have a harder time geting them out)
