Help! Trying to start my 300!
#1
Ok guys, I recently got a Bayou 300, its an older model, probably 10 years old, for free. Thing is, there is no key to it, and the battery was dead. So I charge the battery, and jump the solenoid, to check it, and it cranks over. Should it actually start when I do this? Remeber I dont have a key, and I disconnected the plug on the solenoid going to the ingnition. Im going to clean the carb, and gas tank and lines next. What should I do? Thanks for your help!

Ok, but it wont start, I havent gotten it running yet.
Heres my question:
If I jump the solenoid, without the key, theoretically, should it start? Remember, the plug for the ingnition switch (key that I dont have) is disconnected at the solenoid.
I think my choke cable is broken too, Im not sure though. Ill clean the carb, put a new spark plug, and new filter in too. Thanks

Easiest way to check, is to check for spark while its spinning. My guess would be no spark. If you disconnect the plug, behind the key, you should be able to jump the two wires, but not sure which two. Have you got a wiring diagram? Another way, is to write down the number, on the face of the key lock, and go to the dealer and get a new key.

You will have to jump the ignition behind the switch since you don't have a key. It is very easy to do. When I bought my Lakota, I didn't have a key either, hell for that matter, the entire switch had been removed. The only downside you will face when jumping the ignition is that the power is always on (just like the key was turned on) when the wire is jumped and the red ignition button is in the run position. The symptom's you describe are consistant with no spark due to a key in the off position. You would get the same thing if you left the key off and tried to use the pull start.
If the bike hasn't been run for a long time, you will probably have to do the following:
I would bet you will have to take the main jet out of the carb and clean it thoroughly and open all the holes in the long air tube it is connected to with a small pick and air.
Change the oil and filter.
Let me know if you need more info, I have my Lakota service manual (1996) and I'm fairly certain the wiring on the Bayou would be the same.

OK, I just pulled the key lock cylinder out. So when the key is "on" it pretty much just connects both wires together right? If so, I could just wire in a flip switch, and that would be my "key". I really appreciate all the help, thanks guys!

Take the ignition switch completely out and put in a toggle switch made for 12V at about 20A. All Bayou
300s use two wires only on the switch, so no worry about getting them wrong. Unless you get a connection
between those two wires, the ignition system is never powered up.
But, unless it is stored in a secure area, be prepared to take the battery out to deter thieves and joy riders.

OK, thanks. Could I wire this switch in by the starter solenoid, or does it have to be in the front by the key? Im wondering if the two wires that plug into the starter solenoid are the two exact same ignition wires......
Thanks

How would I blow the ignition module? Ive already been messing around with some wiring. The key switch was wired in together with the head light....I think it might be an aftermarket headlight, but maybe not. Would that be normal IF its the stock headlight?
Im going to order a repair manuel, but Im not sure what year, is there a way to find out?
Also, Im new to carbs, where is the main jet, and how do I get to it?
Im pretty good with fuel injected cars, but completely new to carbed small motors. Im learnin, thats what counts.
Also, to check for spark, do you pull the plug, and hold it with rubber gripped pliars? Do you have to ground it? Thanks
