Another front hub question
#1
I just replaced the inner seal of the front hub on my '04 SP400 (early model with the two front hubs). Now I notice a small leak around the drain/fill plug. I have it tightened down good. Can I use teflon tape on the threads of the plug or should I get a new one? Just hope the cast hub threads aren't trashed.
Thanks.
Thanks.

Yea i would deffinatly try a little bit of the tape. Just make sure you dont use to much that way the access doesnt get inside your hub. Im sure it wouldn't be to good to have a huge chunk of tape floating around in your hub.

The tape should be fine...Just make sure you put the right oil in the hubs....Don't do what I did...I put 90 weight in them, and they would lock in on thier own. I went to polaris and bought the oil to put in the hubs. And also don't fill it up all the way. I think you need 4 oz. in each hub.

Thanks, I'll give the tape a try. As far as the oil, I am using the Polaris OEM. Polaris says that each hub holds 4 oz, and to fill them at the 4 or 8 o'clock position, letting the excess drip out. After I did this for both front hubs, I still have about 1-2 ounces left in the 8oz container. So either I didn't fill enough or they really only hold 3-3.5 oz each.

After I fill up the hub, I will drive around for a few mintues and that seems to get the fluid well dispersed. Then I come back and recheck. Also, I had to use one or two layers of tape on the threads to make it stay perfectly dry.

I've gotta be honest. I had never done the replacement before and I could NOT get the rear seal out. Heated it up and pried and pried. I tried for at least an hour and got fed up. Took it to a car mechanic and it took him literally 30 seconds to get the seal out. He put the hub in a vice and just easily tapped the seal out from behind with a screwdriver. Boy did I feel stupid. He then cleaned everything up and put the new seal in. The best part? He didn't even charge me. Guess he felt sorry for me.
