Default jetting for dummies (please anyone's 2 cents)

I just wanted to make this post as a nearly complete guide to helping finding out what just the right mixture (rich/lean) is. This would help me out a ton, cause i'm always wondering what are all the different signs or things to look for in determining the proper mixture. So if anyone could maybe give their 2 cents on tips or signs on how to tell if your bike is too rich or too lean that would be great. thanks for any help.

Its a trial and error process.
What you have to do is ride the bike and determine what areas of the throttle don't seem right. The best thing to determine proper jetting is a plug check. Run the bike at 1/4 1/2 3/4 and full throttle and during each test pull in the clutch and hit the kill while it is still winding out. Then take the plug off and look at it. A proper jetted bike should have a spark plug that is a tan/brown color. Real black means that you are running too rich and the cylinder is being flooded with too much gas that it just cant burn up and it all gets left behind on the plug. Or if the bike is a 2-stroke it could be oil-fouled. This is the same thing. there is too much oil in the gas and isnt getting burned. A rich bike will have poor low speed performance and wont seem very crisp. A lean mixture is just the opposite, not enough gas, or too much air. This is good for low end performance but is potentially dangerous on the top end. Its because with too much air you can pop pistons, or sieze it up. Either way, its not good. A lean bike will fall flat on the top end while a rich bike will performe bad on the bottom end.

Jetting is actually pretty easy once you get to know the basics of a carburator.
READ THIS and see if it helps.

At the bottom of this article, jetting, is a list of lean and rich symptoms.
Usually you can try two things to figure if youre lean or rich.
Pull the choke while its acting up, that will add the starter jet, and make it richer, if it gets better, its lean, if it gets worse, youre rich.
Remove the air box lid, and test drive. This will lean it out, and if it runs better, youre rich....runs worse youre lean.
