I would pick up either the Garmin E-map or the GPS 12 Map as they are super easy to use and you can download detailed maps into them if you want or you can just hit a button and save your location to find your way back. Check them out here

I have a Magellan 315, its OK. First question do you do need the mapping function? This will cost you more money. Second, what accessories are available for it? How are you going to mount it on your quad or truck.

I would recommend the Garmin series. They have the most accessoiries.

My next GPS will be a Garmin with the map downloading capabilities.

Garmin has recently introduced a very compact GPS unit called the etrex. Although it might be considered a "no frills" unit by today's standard, it offers a lot more than the Magellan unit a paid $200 for several years ago.

I would never buy another Magellan based on the poor performance of my unit. It often takes it as long a 5-10 minutes to calculate a fix. (Yes, it has initialized many times with no impact on performamce.) Their newer Magellan models might perform better, however I have never heard anyone complain about a Garmin.

I have seen the etrex adveristed here in Houston for just over 100 bucks.

I have a Garmin 12, It works great, I use it for fishing, and navagating other stuff.. What are the advantages to the map ones? Do they show everything? ATV trails and all? Or what?

The more expensive models have map data stored in memory so that you can reference your position to nearby roads and other landmarks. Another feature found with the more pricey models is the ability to both download and upload map data using pc programs. This allows you to plot routes and produce maps of where you're going and where you've been.

Yes they all show your exact speed. Here is a link to the mapping section on the Garmin page, You can select a map ( I suggest topo, or US roads ) and even zoom into your favorete area right on the web to try it out. Big hint is that you must zoom under .2 mile to get good detail off the web Here is the link:

I currently have the garmin gps 12, this model locates and holds satellites a lot easier than any of the other models I tried out. It is particularly effective even when under tree cover. Mapping is not a necessary feature for atv riding as most trails will not be shown. It displays the mph effectively. Just like anyother electronic device it takes getting used to but once you master it, it is a very useful tool.

Very true, most trails are not shown. The bread crum trail is all you need to get back Personly I find the mapping nice to find close roads/streams along with cool hills to seek out and climb
