whats that...MY ds isnt running right? IMPOSSIBLE! ;)
#1
well i finally got everythin back together (after installing skids/ported intake/clutch springs and various other small crap)
I go to start it to find a dead batt....so i jump it and get it running. But as usual it runs like CRAP!
Here are my problems:
At start up it has a horibbly rough idle....
If i take airbox lid off it dosnt seem to run much different
But, if i block one of the snorkel tubes, it runs better. (this would tell me that the mixture is LEAN correct? IE...too much air...)
But when i richened up the needle and screw a tad it still ran horrible....
pipe/filter/intake are the only real engine mods
And i am at approx 700 ft. (give or take a little of course)
I am currently running a 175 MIKUNI jet (not the KN/dynojet) With the clip at the 4th position from the bottom, with the white washer on the BOTTOM of the e-clip.
Fuel screw is somewhere around 2 out.... although it ran even WORSE when i back it out even further...which would tell me it is RICH?
After running for a few seconds it will occasionally die on me, and when it does it makes a horribly loud SNAP sound.... (i cant quite tell what it is, but im guessing its the piston getting stopped when it dies? (dosnt make a complete revolution..?)
and one more thing is i can smell raw gas from the exhaust...
so anyone have some suggestions for me? (i have like 4 jetting guides and use them all, but im having a lot of trouble since its registering as RICH and LEAN at the same time...)
Any help is appreciated as usual guys
Thanks

Have you checked to see if BOTH plugs are indeed good and are firing? Also make sure that your float in not sticky, and flooding the engine. ALso make sure that the Choke is indeed all the way off. Also make sure their are NO air leaks in your intake setup. It is possible that you cam timing is off, so you might want to take a look at the cam marks to make sure.
Do all us this, and then take two aspirin then check back in the morning!

Make sure you get the engine nice and warm before you trying playing around with the jetting even if you have to work the throttle to keep it running.
Clean the carb lately? Air Filter clean? Gas is good? Choke isnt stuck on or anything? Plugs are good?
I think that horrible snapping/skreetching noise is the starter, the one way bearing trying to turn the wrong way????

i will replace both plugs again, but they will probably get charcoal-ized insantly as usual.... (since ive been trying to figure the jetting out on it, ive gone through a ton of plugs, because its rich SOMEWHERE i just havnt found where....)
i will replace them, and clean out all my jets...see if that helps at all...
to "clean out the carb" what all does that require me to do?
I will check for air leaks at the intake/carb area, but everything was installed the same way it came out. (i didnt replace the intake o-rings as they looked fine)

My 04 and a 03 DS at the dealer were constantly fouling plugs. Mine would run ok when you got it running but sometimes it would flood out to the point it wouldnt start. But it did smell like it was running rich. Anyways the dealer told me to turn the pilot jet 1/4 turn clockwise and that fixed it, the pilot jet is located on the bottom side of the carb......dont know if yours might be out of adjustment enough to make it run bad or not, it is quick and easy to try anyways. I just turned mine and cleaned the plugs and it runs great and starts great now. The dealer told me that they are not sure if Bomb sets the pilot jet correctly at the factory or if there is a problem with the chokes never coming completely off.

First, make sure that you have a fully charged battery before going to the carb adjustments. The ds ignition requires a good battery charge to fire properly.
Second, really should avoid jump starting the DS. Not so much the action of jump starting necessarily, the problem is when you remove the cables, the quad's charging system is stressed heavily. You are likely to overheat the regulator/rectifier and burn it out, or worse. Charging systems on these are designed to maintain a charge on the battery, not to bring a dead battery back up to charge (deep cycle).

o, ok good info to know.... I think ill get a new battery before we go....
maybe ill try charging it, as it does crank over 10-20 times once i jump it.
Also an update, i removed the intake and reinstalled it to find one of the o-rings was missing... found it in my garage... (when i test fitted it one fell out, and i was 99.9% sure it went in...but this time it for SURE is in!)
i thought ok, after fixing that it should be ok...but believe it or not it runs WORSE now....!
when at idle (if i can keep it idling that is...) i can pull the snorkels out and pull the lid off the air box and it dosnt improve.....
and if i put my hand over one of the snorkels, and leave the airbox lid on, it also dosnt seem to improve... (im guessing that because of the missing 0-ring that it was sucking air, and running lean which is why it ran better when i plugged one of the snorkels...)
im still totally lost.... dont even know what to change now.... fresh plugs in, jets are all clean and everything appears to be in working order....
one thing i did notice today was that it seemed to knock a little bit...which would put me under the assumption im lean....but im seriously having brain cramps, as to how i can be lean, and still be fouling plugs, and have black soot all over my pipe....

Roost your problem does sound a lot like what mine was doing. I would check the pilot jet. No matter what i tried to do to mine the plugs would always foul out. It would sputter some during idle, then if i let it sit for a few days and would go to start it and it would crank and sputter but not fire up. Mine did this ever since i bought it I thought it was just hard starting, then when i figured out it was fouling out the plugs i talked with the dealer and they told me to bring it in or i could just adjust the pilot jet 1/4 turn clockwise. I cleaned the plugs and turned the jet in and it fired right up and does not sputter anymore or run rich. If your plugs are soaked with gas and it wont start then its probably the jet or the float in the carb is stuck.

alright good news....battery seems to be "decent" as once the engine gets going ti charges it enough to start it next time (dont know if it will last over night or not...but i can always pull start)
put two fresh plugs in and that helped, then adjusted clip one position, and screw a tad. Took it to my local shop and both mechanics rode it, said if it was them they would be happy with it the way it was....
the one thing i DO NOT like about it right now, is it bogs/sputters/pauses (what ever u want to call it) right past idle....
im pretty sure the jets bottom out....? i have changed mains, and have cleaned out my pilot before....
