Default Banshee In Trouble

Ok so here's the problem, I let a friend of mine ride my banshee, and he screwed something up in the tranny. It is stuck in 4th, but it can shift to 5th, and 6th, but it won't gear down into 3rd or lower. I have been looking and reading about this forever, and I can't find a solution. The dealer says it will cost easily 2000, and thats the common price among all of the dealers around here. So I don't wanna pay that price for it to be fixed, and I am mechanically inclined somewhat, so with a little guidence, I am hoping we can fix this together. Oh and the guy that wrecked the Shee isn't paying for it, and there is no real way i can make him. So what I need is some sites or suggestions as how to tear the motor out, and tackle this problem. Your help is appreciated much, thanks

Do you know exactly what your friend did to it? Go to the bansheehq.com forums, you will find an answer to all your questions there.

TheChosenOne,

Can you honestly say that your buddy screwed up your tranny? What specific action did he do to blow up the gearbox? You have probably put in 100's of hours on the quad to every hour you lent it to your friend. The tranny would have cratered on you most likely in the very near future. If something goes out when I lend a friend a quad, I expect to pay for it. If the guy crashed the quad and broke something, I would expect him or her to pay for it. By the way, sorry to hear your ride went down. I replaced my 02 Raptor tranny, cost me $1300 or so.

The dealers are the most expensive place to have repairs done. I would look for a recommendation from one of your riding friends of a shop that works on quads. You should get a lower estimate. Or if you have some time on your hands, buy the manual and tackle it yourself. Alba Action has great on-line microfiche for OEM parts that will help in ordering your replacement parts. Good luck!

hopefully the fix is cheap....when i took my db engine to have an estimate done, after it burnt a hole threw the piston. they estimated 1700 in parts, and 2500 if i get them to fix it....after almost sh!tn myself from what they said. i decided to rip it apart and see what went wrong. got some of my friends to help me, and my sis's fiancee(mechanic) and i only had to buy around $410 worth of parts.

Have ya ever been inside a Banshee motor before? It could be alot of things. The first and simplest, cheapest ,is check the shift shaft. The fork on the end can become worn and so loose it will not grab the shift star to shift it.Next the shift forks, which are usually the problem. You prolly either bent one or they are so worn they won't do their job. These cost around $100 US to replace all 3 if ya do it yourself. Most of the time when they get worn really bad they'll stick in a certain gear just like yours. To replace these you have to completely tear the motor apart and remove the trans. The forks are under the gear sets. You pull the circlips outta the shift fork shafts, they are against the stator side of the case.Slide the shafts outta the clutch side of the motor and the forks will come off.To get to all this like I said you must completely tear the motor apart and take both sets of tranny gears out.The only thing you can leave in is the shift drum. While you're doin this I'd go ahead and change all the seals in the motor. If ya don't want to take the jugs off you can take all the clutch accessories off and stator/flywheel.Turn the motor upside down and only remove the bottom half of the case. This way ya don't have to mess with pistons, cylinders, and the crank and the gearsets will stay in the top half when ya pull the bottom off.
I hope this helps. If ya need anything else let me know.I do these motors all the time.

We grabbed a case of beers last night, and tore into it kinda. The shift linkage is fine, and everything, we tried turning the shift star, and it's the same thing as when it was all together. Now would be a good time to do the shift star mod. but thats besides the point. I'm guessin it would have to be the shift forks, but it is definately something inside. Oh and another oops fuc, when we took the pressure plate of the clutch, we also ended up pulling out all the clutch plates, not knowing any better. We have then all back in same order and stuff, but there are those little steel discs, with the raised poeton on them.... a couple of them. Are they supposed to be facing a certain way? I think i might have pooched that set up. How hard is it to take them all out start from scratch putting them back in? I just don't know the proper config if that makes sence.

And u say u do this all the time, on a scale of 1-10, how hard would u think it would be to do this as a frist timer? We do have good mechanical skills, but i don't wanna pop a spring and not know where it goes or something like that. Pictures would be awsome, as well as a list of needed tools, parts, and a walk through. I'm not askin u to do all this for me, but if u know of a good site or sometihng like that it would be great thanks.
