Default Honda Foreman 450 smoking!?

Last September I bought an 03 Foreman new from the dealer. Over the last couple of months it has started blowing white/bluish smoke when I rev the engine or shift. I only have a little over 300 miles on it. I'm concerned that the thing is gonna croke on me. I'm a little afraid of taking it bake to the dealer, not the best dealership to work with in problem cases. Any suggestions on what to check or othe signs of trouble I should look for are much apreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Have you been storing it, upright, on the back rack? Is the air filter over oiled? Is there oil in the air box, from the breather?
Is this still the original oil?

To answer your question I need more info. Does it smoke under accelleration? Or does it smoke when you shut the throttle off after accelleration? Does it smoke after you crack the throttle open after coming down a hill? Do you have the correct oil level in the pan?

Quad is stored in a garage on level ground, air filter may be over oiled, no oil in the air box from the breather, and I change the oil at least every three months (sooner if it's been rode in thick mud or water.

The smoke is blue, it smokes during acceleration, not sure about comming off the hill, havn't paid attention to it then, I check the oil level and it is in the safe boundries.

How does the over oiled filter affect it? Will it idle rough and delay acceleration (slugish when cold)?
While it's idling the exhaust is clear, only smokes when you give it throttle.

Thanks for all the replies. I'll be checking the air filter later this week, I try cleaning it and reoiling it.

Thanks again.

Wow, those symptoms are not good. That points to ring problems.
I would do a compression test or better yet, a leakdown test and see what numbers you come up with.
If you over fill the sump it will sling too much oil on the bore and the rings can't handle it, and then smoke, smoke, smoke. But you said it was within limits?
If you over oil the filter, that oil can be sucked off the filter and burnt.
It could be something like breather or vent problems also, but thats a long shot.
It's too bad about the dealer. If it's like around here, Honda dealers are a dime a dozen, and I would find another good dealer to check your quad out, especially if it's still under warranty.

Yeah, I feel like I might be in for some trouble. I'm gonna call another dealer that's about 2 hours away to see if they will provide any better service and honor the warranty. I'm afraid that by doing the initial oil change and inspection myself may have voided my extended warranty. Hope this works. Wish me luck.

Thanks,
Mark

I've had very good luck with Honda, but it may be just my dealer.

I do all my own work on my quad, and asked Bomb if that would affect my warranty. They told me if I used good oil and changed it like the book told me that it would be no problem.

The scarry thing is, you just don't know what the dealer will say.

Please write back and let us all know how things worked out for you, and what the problem was. That way, we can all learn.

I called two different dealers, the one I bought from and another one that a friend had suggested. My dealer said he's not sure about the warranty and the other said basically what you were told, use the right oil do the scheduled maintenance and I would be fine. He also said to go ahead re-clean the air filter change the oil and keep a close eye on the levels. He said if it gets worse bring it in and we'll work with honda to get it fixed. He also suggested that I check the choke for proper operation look for stickiness dirt and such. I'm gonna do all this and take it back out this weekend and see what happens.

Thanks for the support. I'm so glad that these forums exist. I have learned so much from reading through all of the threads. Great place chat, although I don't get a lot of chances to respond, I try to help where I can.

--Later,
Mark

What youve done shouldnt void the warrentee. But you do want to get it documented by a dealer BEFORE the warrentee runs out. Are you sure its blue and not black....if its black its running rich, and could be a simple as stuck "choke", or needle misadjusted. Do you have any drivability problems....stumbling, doggy, wont rev up?
When you check the oil, is it per the owners manual ( dont screw it in).
Just for a test ride....leave the air filter off, and ride where it isnt dusty, see if it blows blue with it off, (but have the air box lid on, or itll be very lean.)
Let us know what you find out.
