My son is stripping down his quad to have the frame, a arms and swing arm powder coated. Can you give me any tips on what to do to make sure the bolts and bushings will go back in.

Most places will plug them for you or should anyways. On my R, I wish I would have taken more time and smoothed out some of the welds, because they sure do show up big time now that I got mine back. The smoother the frame, the better it will look in the end. Just something to look out for.

If I ever do another frame I am going to take the time to put ALL the bolts back in the holes on the frame and have them powder coated along with it. That way you don't get powder coating on the inner threads, and your bolts look awsome when everything is re assembled as well. I know a guy that done this and it looked NICE!

If you don't do this then most places will plug the holes up for you. You still have to be carefull when putting it back together and if you get a hole with coating in it you will have to run the bolt in and out until you get the coating out of the way. If not you can easily snap bolts before they tighten all the way down!

Yeah or run a quick tap through it. When you guys get the bolts done, how do you tighten them back up in there, does that stuff scratch off easily, or is it pretty much indestructible.

The guy I know that done it took a wire brush (wheel) on a grinder and knocked it off the bolts (just the threads leave it on the heads). It is much easier to run the bolt over a grinder wheel then to clean out a hole full of powder coating! LOL Trust me I had to do the later!

The powder coating is VERY tough. Its not indestructable, but it is tough. You are not going to just scratch it off.

My swing arm and arms were done when I bought them. I would think you would have to take all the bushing out and clean out the grase. Then tape off the tips to keep from getting coating down in the holes. May want to check with someone else on that one though. If you take them to the shop and ask they SHOULD be able to tell you what they need taken off and show you how they can tape it off.

What kind of bike does your son have? I know on my TRX250R I could not powdercoat my lower a-arms because you can't remove the lower ball joints. I think most Honda's if not most manufacturers are like that too.
