hello, i am new to this forum but have found them very helpful when i had my 77 scout, and needed parts. I have raptor 660r and 2nd gear is gone it slips and clatters and misses, so i just skip it and go to 3rd. well as if this wasn't enough now when i try to start it it sounds like the starter isn't engageing you can just hear it spinning and sometime a chattering sound, allmost like a bendex is going out if i keep trying to start it on and off the button it will sometime eventually start, but is getting less fequint I have also found that if i rock the bike or go thought the gears, or try to start in gear with no clutch that sometimes it will catch, you can pull start the bike fine, in 3rd gear., i have removed the cover to the starter and the side of the motor with the shifter and looked at the gears dosen't look to be any problems, althonght could see some chipping of the metal on the acutal engine block at the bottom by the opening for the crank case gears also there is a tiny bit of play in the crank case gears, and when i hit start with cover off the starter gears spins and movers out maybe a 10th on a inch. don't know if it needs to move more or not at all. I have also removed to plastic caps on the crankcase side by the shifter the ones with the flathead slot, oil barely drained out of the lower one should this be full to the top cap"smaller one" with these removed i put a ratchet and scoket on the nut in the bigger one and turned it and by doing this sometimes i can get the starter to engage, i have read other post and don't know if it is the one way starter clutch or tranny or clutch. I am new to the atv world and this is my first quad, know very little about them but i am mech. inclined somwhat so some help would be greatly appricated, before i go spend a ton in parts or sell myself to a dealer
if someone lives near oklahoma city and is will to help would be glad to pay or work out some kinda deal i have lots of toys and junk at my place. thanks matt bell. oh yea went from a 84 ytm200 3 wheeler to my raptor damn this thing is fast .

 

Well, first off sound like your second gear is out on your tranny. I wouldn't be still riding this. Second, sounds like your one way is out. You need to upgrade your tranny to an 02 and upgrade your one way. Try raptortranny.com

 

Dont replace the throw out bearing with a stock assembly, I would definitely recommend the L&A One Way. Replace the large gear it engages with, there is most likely chatter marks all around the shaft and it would probably prematurely wear out the rollers in a new bearing. Check out my pic of 2nd gear in my Raptor tranny. Good luck and stop riding it till this is fixed. You are probably generating alot of chips in there. That raptortranny.com recommendation is great.
