85 250 es Big Red Cylinder Question
#2
Hone your cylinder and get youself a new set of rings while you have the cylinder off.
Check your timing chain for wear.
Put in a new set of valve stem seals and go ahead and lap the valves if they are in question or just as a precaution.
Don't forget to readjust the valves after you get it all back together.
As for the smoking, it may not have been the engine at all but an overrich carb problem. Excessive crankcase pressure isn't neccessarily a bad thing. You just don't want so much pressure that it blows oil back through your airbox or blowing out oil seals.
If either is happening, you may want to check the condition of your oil filter, and also be sure you aren't running more oil than specified. A stopped up oil filter and one installed backwards causes excessive crankcase pressure and almost always ends up damaging a camshaft, rockerarms, and cylinder head in the process.
Finally, be sure to remove the crankcase breather hose and be sure it is not restricted in any way. Even a small ammount of debris or a kink in the hose is enough to build pressure in the case and blow oil right through the hose itself.
