How do you guy's go about the break-in period?Do you do it by the book,or do you have other methods? My kvf700 say'd no more than 1/2 throttle. What you guy's think about this?right or wrong?

If you ask 20 different people you'll get 20 different answers. Some say baby it, others say break it in the same way you plan on riding it. With my new quads, bike, and car, I always find a good open spot and pick a higher gear, and slowly speed up to WOT, then slowly deccelerate, then accelerate, then deccelerate. With my car and truck I seem to get better mileage then what is claimed on the window, and the ATV's and sportbike seem to have a strong, smooth pull. I never had any problems (premature wearing or funny noises), and other machines exactly like mine aren't any faster.

That's how I do it, anyway!!

Go to www.duncanracing.com and then go tech center. They have a complete procedure for breaking in two stroke and four stroke motors. I assume they are speaking of racing engines, but it should be good for a stock motor too.

There are millions of ways. Duncan's way may be catered more for race engines than stockers. I wouldn't follow that for a new quad or a car/truck.

Never baby any new engine. This can prevent ring seating.
Never idle it more than necessary.
Avoid breaking in at exessively low rpms, it can start to make marks on the cyl wals where the skirt ends on some motors.
Never run it at 1500 at no load unless the CAM manuf specifically says to to that.
Avoid running at really high RPMs. Higher RPMs generate more ring and oil heat during break in.

Always break in using the throttle positions that the engine manufacturer states. With many engines, this means FULL throttle. You will notice that the pros may use full throttle but not high rpm. Diesels, Airplane engines etc. Give it gas at some midrange RPM that will produce a lot of ring pressure to seat the rings, but don't wind it up.

Kawi says half throttle. I don't know why they say that. I'm not saying they are wrong, they probably have good reason.

I would say to just ride it. Give it gas. Try to stay in high range but don't go over maybe 40mph. Try to stay in low range after the break in.
