How can you make a fast Trailboss 330?
#1
My neighbor is 16, and quite awhile ago his father passed away and left him and his brother some $, but instead of buying a more sporty quad, he wants to mod up his Boss. So here I am doing the good neighbor thing.
I told him about the pipe and clutch kits, what I believed was a 414cc kit, and maybe finding an aftermarket cam. And he wants to know how fast this will make him, if it'll leave him broke down, and if he can beat his brothers Artic Cat 454 4x4. So I would like to find out what the best mods would be.
And since I can only guesstimate what these mods would do, could someone please give me a good idea as to how it would wheelie, accelerate, and what a new top-speed might be? And if it would still be good for slogging through mud with me and his brother? Thanks from the both of us!!!

With the 414 kit and the stage 1 RCR, you're looking around 1,100 dollars, I think. Call Rick Ritter to make sure. I honestly couldn't tell you if that would beat the AC, never saw one. The 414 is something I would like to get for mine later. Mine will wheelie on pavement, but was at my brother in laws land and the tires would spin instead of grab. Too dry and sandy. Still kept the low end torque, so it's still good in mud. Another thing you might look at is changing the sprocket (relatively cheap) and getting a bigger carb. I would suggest he put all the things he wants to do on paper and add it all up. He may be better off selling the Boss and taking the money he would have used for mods and check into a Scrambler.

We looked at RCR's site but couldn't find anything for the Boss, and he didn't want to bother calling (kids these days!!), so he decided on HSP's speed kit. So that'll gimme a project to do in a couple weeks. Thanks anyways!!

be a good neighbor and have him sell it (while its still worth something)
and have him buy a sport bike
(not trying to shoot anyone down,,,,,just seems like the wisest thing to do)

Got to agree with Bing. The only reason I'm doing it to mine is because I got it so cheap, and I have no unreal expectations from it. I know it will never be the fastest, and would not suggest trying to build it up just to try to beat someone else. It has the jumping ability of a cinder block with shocks. When I do get a new machine, I will have a better idea of what I'm getting into when I add on to it. I get the idea this isn't going to be a quad he hangs on to for a while. Maybe in a year or two he'll be ready to sell it and gets something a little more sporty and faster. He'll never get back the money he has put into it.

I agree 100% he should get a faster quad too, but unless he could afford a new Scrambler a new sport quad just wouldn't be any fun. We ride the trails behind our houses and it just mudholes and tight technical stuff. I can't even take my Zilla through there because I can never find the right gear or it gets hung up too easy.
2 falls ago when I had my old Trailblazer we took a Raptor, Warrrior, and Ex through the trails to the powerlines, and we didn't have any fun. Everyone kept getting stuck, the trail was rough and unpleasant, and we were wet and cold from the mud. Those of us on the Boss and Blazer were the most comfy and got stuck less, but we still helped everyone else up and out of mudholes, getting more wet and muddy then we would have just staying on our quads.
There's maybe a total of 200 yards on an old dirt road that you can go WFO on, but getting to it is a b!tch. And other than that, everyone that rides through there should really have a 4X4, but the 2x Polaris' do good except for in the spring when its real muddy.
I hafta load my LT500 up in a pick up to get somewhere to ride it, and if the neighbors had a truck or trailer, then I'm sure both of them would want racers because they would be able to use them. But with only being able to ride the trails that lead from behind the houses, they just wouldn't make it anywhere.
If we ride the road to get to another trail system, the 2 yahoo's next door get cranking along as fast as they can go, but once we're back on the trails you just can't go fast. And them racing up and down the road on a sport quad would last about 12 minutes.
So, while I agree with him getting a new sport quad, it really wouldn't be practical. And all he wants to do is to be able to pull a wheelie and beatt his brother up and down their driveway.

I would tell your friend to invest in a scrammy 500 4x4....The trailboss is a great machine but I know so many people that own one,(they like it) but then they get tired of being in the back of the pack behind bigger quads,,,then they go spend ungodly money to mod them up just to hang with lightly modded scrammys and stuff...I would say,,,sell the boss,,,look into getting a scrammy 4x4(since you mudd alot)..I know you can get a used one for pretty cheap..and as for brand new...you can find some deals...I just know that trailboss owners arn't happy in the long run and I think if you owned a scrammy you would be happier in the end.

I am sorry your friend lost his father . I have an 18 year old and 13 year old myself .
My advice would be to keep his quad stock , don't abuse it and keep the oil changed and maintenence taken care of .
If he has a little extra money have him invest it in a CD , or better yet , have him get with a responcible family member of his and go to an honest reputable financial adviser .
