Well Austin..........did you try something??? I do not have rust in my tank, but someday I might need to know one of these tips and would like to know what works.

You can buy the acid treatment and neutralizer from Yamaha dealers in "tank size" bottles. With complete instructions. Reasonable price too. I've used it many times and it does work very good. Except I leave the acid in overnight instead of the recommended 4 hours.

There are a few things that i have tried personally....... tank coatings and the acid treatment.
The coating inside the tank is trash.....after awhile the gas eats the liner and gums up the carb in a bad way.
I recently tried muriatic acid, you can by this from a hardware store. be very very careful not to spill it on your skin. clean all of the gas out of the tank don't put the same gas back in, use it for your lawn mower. make sure the petcock is off, pour about a cup of acid into the tank, put the gas cap on and roll the tank around so the acid can get the rust then empty the acid out. do this 2 or 3 times then rinse out with water (yes water). you can drain some through the petcock to clean it out also. don't let the water dry empty a litre of automatic tranny fluid in the tank and roll it around some more. empty out the tranny fluid as much as you can and fill with new gas, add a bottle of gas line antifreeze and start the bike. the tranny fluid will also help clean out the carb.
Hope its helpful
