I sit on the quad and put my handlebars straight. Then I line up both tires by eye with the rears, and then I measure from the middle of the front and back of the front tires until they are the same distance or slightly toed out.

I always straighten the bars, then measure from a centered point (middle of bumper, steering stem...) and get the tires even with a tape, then measure the center of the tires on front and back, and try to get the front measurement about 1/8-1/4 inch shorter. That way the fronts of the tires are a tad closer together and the quad doesn't wander.

You actually want them strait, no variance between the front and back. Well....I don't know this for a fact, but I was on Digger Doug's site and he has something on there about having them equal measuring.

It kind of depends on the riding you plan to do. Toe in or toe out gives you different handling charachteristics. You done want to be more than an 1/8 or so off though, like faster said.
