1986 250R/es Trail Boss not starting
#1
Ok, sorry for the long post, but here goes...
I just bought this bike from a friend for $500, and am going to be doing most of the work on it myself. Not because I dont have the money to send it somewhere, but I want to do it myself. I am not a newb to mechanical working, but I dont know a lot about engines, etc.
1) The bike wont start, but sounds like it is pretty close to starting. I know it is getting spark, but havent done a compression test. What steps could I take to find the problem?
2) I am worried, that it will need an engine rebuild. What all is involved in this? I know that if it did need it, it would need to be bored out, and I wouldnt be able to do that, but is the rest of the engine rebuild process pretty straight forward?
Thanks!
Josh

The problem with not starting.....Does the plug have fuel on it?? Is the actual spark plug sparking? Check compression(not sure what it is supposed to be, I was thinking like 90, but not for sure) The rebuild, if you don't have the right compression, then you probably need to rebuild it, and then you know what you have too. Other than boring, it is simple. You will just do the top end most likely(need to check and make sure the bottom end feels tight), so all you have to do is put a new piston on and slap her back together. Now is the time to be modding it too, if you are thinking of going that route...you will save money in the long run, if you are planning to do it. You can get it polished and ported, or you can kind of clean up the ports a little yourself. If it is a new bike, I would change all of the oils(counterbalance, gearcase) and clean the air filter(or get a new one) and also make sure that it is jetted correctly.

The boring can be done about anywhere, your dealer may know of somewhere, or he may do it himself.....or like a good NAPA will do it too. If you can't find a place you may have to mail it somwhere, then I can tell you where. I think the boring is pretty fair priced, I was thinking about 50 or so dollars per size. As for the jetting, you have to wait until you get it running, put a new plug in it, and start it up, run it hard, and then immeadiately shut it off and make the end of the electrode in the plug be a light brown color. You can change jets by removing the bowl off of the bottom of the carb and taking a 6mm? and remove the jet...and then go up or down depending on the color of the plug.

Ok, so, for the boring, what size would you suggest? If I have heard right, I can do .01 .02 or .03 right?
and by NAPA, you mean NAPA Auto Parts? If so, I am in Dallas, and there are plenty of those around

Yes I mean napa auto parts....we have one that has a little machine shop in it too, and they will take care of it.....When you bore, you can bore it: .020, .040, .060, .080, and big bore(.10)

So, I am guessing going .040 is going to cost more than going .020? What kind of improvements will I see out of going .040 instead of .020? Sorry for all the questions, I am a noob to the whole engine rebuild thing
Also, is this a good rebuild kit? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...spagename=WDVW

The piston that it requires is the same cost....usually it is $50 or so....per bore(like if you are at .020, then .040=$50, and .060=$100) You won't notice any power gains through boring, unless you plan on big boring it. However, if you have very little compression, and it badly needs bored and a new pistion and rings, then you may notice a difference, because you will actually have the power it is supposed to have. Any more questions, just keep asking them.....I don't mind, and other guys on here are more intelligent than me, so there advice will be helpful too.
