Can i bypass the temp switch on my fan and make it manual
#1
My temp switch got wet and shorted out, so instead of keep buying switches can i make my fan manual with a switch and if so how do i do it. The fan still works because i made a jumper to test it out

i guess you could just mount a toggle switch somewhere. but, you would need to know the temp. so you could turn it off and on at the apropriate time. sounds like kind of a hassle to me.

I just put a $3 switch down there by the temp switch and turned it on whenever I rode until my new temp switch came in. All you have to do is put any standard toggle switch in there and tape up the connections so they don't short out.

those wires are slide on conectors if you go to the auto parts you can get male and female type and wire in a switch without cutting any wire, leave the option of always going back to stock. this system works great for me, it runs a lot cooler.

My buddy did this with a dash mounted switch. (Like Sandman is saying.)
Also, make sure you use thick enough wire and your switch is rated for the amp draw on the fan.
Good idea to carry an extra set of fuses after this job. In case you blow a fuse you can replace it and be up and going again.

I think the fuse is rated for 15 amps so all wiring and switches should have the same rating.
Call your dealer for a price on a new switch.

I did this on my BAJA. The only thing is, when I kill the engine with teh key, it contiinues to run fora 2-3 seconds. I guys I have it wired to the wrong lead wire. It doesnt hurt anything. Just have to get used to killing it with the switch on the handle bar.

that fan probably draws between 2 and 5 amps max. you could probabaly use 18-22 gauge wire and get by. it looks like the wire on that temp sensor is 14-16 gauge. generaly you want circuit protection to double the acual amp draw. so just about any switch you can find will work fine.

You can rewire it to a switch in place of the temperature switch.
What I did with mine is set it up as an override. The temperature switch still functions normally, but I wired a manual switch in parallel to the temp switch so that I can override the temp switch to turn it on.
I also used an automotive relay instead of wiring fan power directly though the switch. That way you don't have to have a switch that is rated to 15amps. The wiring of this is a little more complicated, but not difficult.
