Is you carb stock ? If not ignore whats below
If it is its vacum operated and will work better with the lid on
There is a diaphram on the top of the carb which is attached to the slide this diaphram is actuated by the vacum in your air box
not just my opinion i have it in writing from some one who knows about such things
I have cut a few coils of the spring to sharpen throttle response which seems to work ok

I do have the stock carb and I have heard that before, but my 650 runs a lot better w/o the lid on already (w/o re-jetting)

Thats interesting
i will try it on mine to see if there is any differance I am in the process of re jetting at the moment and i was to rich on the main today so the lid off might cure that problem without changing the jet
I will keep u posted

You know I keep hearing about the lid being on , but when I was out at glamis last trip it picked up better all through the gears with the lid off, and it was not the noise, it pulled harder.

same here, I took the lid off just to try it once before, this was when my exhaust had no packing (it was all blown out) and the exhaust was so loud I couldn't tell the differnce in the intake sound, BUT my 650 did make more power without a doubt. now I have my exhaust re-packed and a quiet core added to it, and it still makes more power than before.
I don't understand the whole vaccum operated slide thing, I havent noticed a differnce with the lid off as far as that....

A vaccum slide carb requires intake vaccum to operate correctly. if you take off the lid or even worse take off the intake tube and run a direct filter, it doesn't work as well. mr. HP has spent countless hours on a dyno, and he will tell you that jetted correctly for lid on will make for hp that jetted for lid off.

Sounds like to me we can go around and around on this subject, yes I have read that on a dyno the DS650 can make more HP with the lid on, but you see when I'm dailing my quad out in Glamis, I dont have a dyno, my dyno is Olds, or China Hill, and Ill tell you what!
Hitting those hills you can feel the bikes tunning going up those hills, I tested mine with the lid on and without the lid, my personel feelings on this isl, My DS took those hills better without the lid, I re-jetted from 175 to 185, 45 slow, needle 5th, 3 1/2 turns, and guess what!
Im a happy camper! To me it not about HP, its the torque!
And that is what I bought a 4 stroke for. Well also to putt with the kids.
