Leaking 2003 500i manual
#1
My 2003 500i is leaking where the foot shifter comes out of the motor. This is also where the high/low lever goes into the motor. Has anyone every replaced that seal, what am I getting into? Thanks!

In the manual for a 2003 500 manual transmission machine there is an oil seal (part #3402-071) that is located on the HI/LOW shifter. Is that the right one? If not you can go and look at an on-line parts schematic at www.brownsleisureworld.com and see if you can find a part #.
If so it looks like it can be replaced by removing two circular clips and the shift lever. Then take the seal out and put the new one in.
I looked through my manual and have not found a specific procedure for replacing that sea, but it should be similar to replacing a wheel bearing seal. The manual talks more about how to take apart and put back together the engine/transmission than replacing specific parts like that.
If you can find a part number you can usually call the dealer and ask the mechanic how to replace that seal and they should be able to give you specific information on replacing the part.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info. Great website....found the seal, but it seems like there should be a second seal. I would talk to my dealer, but the mechanic is an idiot, I wouldn't let him change the oil in my quad.

Sorry to hear about your AC mechanic. You might try looking in the phone book for a 1-800 number for another dealer near you. I think the AC website has a dealer locator too you might be able to use for that.
That seal is below the oil line so if you order the part make sure you get the stuff to change your oil while you are at it.
It just remebered that you might also want to check you crankcase vent tube. I read another post here a while ago where the vent tube got plugged and caused that seal to pop out and leak.Just trying to determine a cause before you replace.
