250R questions
#1
I just picked up an 86 TRX 250R a couple of months ago for $900. I put a case saver and a new clutch cable and moved the needle down one groove to make it run pretty good. It doesn't have any cracks, the right lower a-arm does have a good ding in it needs tires and plastic, but every time I go to crank it I only kick it once and it is alive.
Is it safe to move the needle down another position. It was running way too rich when I got it, so I moved the needle down and it runs alot better. I checked the plug and it still seemed rich. It came with a 160 main so I moved down to a 158 and it ran worse. It has the stock 34 mm carb. Right now it runs pretty good but some times it will try to bog on me What do I need to do.
Also has anyone tried RPMs adjustable timing plate. The last 250R I had would spank a stock banshee, and sometimes on premium gas it would spark knock alittle, so the timing was advanced. The bike I have now runs the same on 87 octane as 93. Will I get noticable power from the advanced timing?
Right now I am running pretty close with a Banshee I just need alittle more. In a drag race a banshee will pull out on me in first gear and my front wheels stay even with his back wheels until we wind sixth out and he slowly, barely starts pulling on me. The tires are shot, so when I get new ones I am getting 22 inchers. Then I should be ahead on top end but I am going to need alittle something extra on the bottom.
Other information: it does have an fmf pipe and uni filter with holes in the airbox.
The last R I had came with a 36 mm carb rad valve lightened flywheel and paul turner pipe. And with 22 in. tires it would leave a stock banshee out of the hole and top end. I have not been in either one of the motors, so do yall think either one was ported or polished to get this performace or is that all it takes to run with a banshee?

Don't know answer to your question but I've got one for you. Where is Poplarville at? I live in Pontotoc. Anywhere close, we could go ridind sometime. I usually go to the Trace State Park. Also, you sound like you know 250R's pretty well so could you help a newbie out. I picked up this 86 not too long ago and rode it on one spark plug for 2~3 months just fine. Now me and a buddy of mine went riding Thursday and it wet fouled a plug.(br8es) So I went and got another one and 2 hours later same thing. Please help, I'm very new to 2-strokes and don't know too much. Do I need to put in a hotter plug or what? Thanks for any help.

Poplarville is way down south, about 5 hours from Ponotoc. But I travel the whole state frequently. In fact I was in Ponotoc just last Saturday, at the cow auction. I work in Grenada everyother semester and in starkeville at MSU everyother semester. I usually go home every weekend but I have got to cut that down with the gas prices. My email address is rss5@ra.msstate.edu email me and we will get up one weekend.
As far as your 250R, I know alittle, but I am the one asking questions. I would stick with br8es. What does your plug look like, what color, on the end. Also check your plug after going wide open. Meening, drive the quad wide open for about 20 seconds in any gear wide open. Pull the clutch in, kill it and let off of the gas at the same time. When you come to a stop then do a plug reading.
