Water logged Polaris 400 sport
#1
Hi all,
Need some help please. My 400 sport (2 cycle) got dumped into a pond. The engine sucked in all kinds of water. I removed the air box, carb, exhaust to get out what water I could, but the exhaust port still spits water when I crank the engine. Is there a drain plug for the crank case? Should the engine be rebuilt? Please send suggestions.
Thanks,
Headstanz

Did you shut the motor off, or did it hydrolock? If the motor hydrolocked bad enough you may be in for a full rebuild. There is a small drain on the crank, if it's like my buddies trailboss. His is on the left side, if you were sitting on it. Drain all fluids, and see if it will run. If there is damage it will likely knock really bad.

thanks MBrooks420 for the quick response.
The motor was off when I got to it so I would assume that it hydrolocked. I was more concerned with the kid that was riding it, although I'm sure that he did not have the where-with-all to turn it off.
It seemed like it wanted to start at one point after I removed the air cleaner, exhaust and cleaned out the bowl, but as I cranked the motor I was concerned about the water still coming out of the exhaust port. Then I removed the plug an cranked it to attempt to get all the water out and make sure it was gettin' gas, but it did not seem to stop so I believe that there must be water in the crank case also. I did look for a drain, but couldn't seem to find one, but I will check again now that I have a general area to look.
Thanks again,

There must be a way to drain it out somehow. He had a sticking needle valve, which filled his crank with gas. I remember tipping it on its side, which did make the gas come out of the recoil, but I think we did that just to look on the bottom for the drain. I think it's on the block to the left, and behind the recoil. If it was idling when it sucked in the water, the motor probably isn't shot. I sunk me last 230 under light throttle, and only developed a slight knock. I rode it for about 2 years after that.

My thanks to both of you for your help and suggestions.
what causes the knock? bent crank or pistion rod?
My inclination is to think that the motor was at an idle when it became hydro locked. I looked only superficially today, but will get more in-depth tomorrow. I have half the atv torn down and was considering pulling the motor, but now I won't. I really appreciate all of the information.

If yor 400 is like the rest, Remove skid plate-drain starter bolt next to rh foot peg then drain counterbalancer fluid 10w30 bolt with phillips scew . the drain crankcase bolt to right of that=is at an angle like the starter/recoil drain. counterbalancer is 90degr. to floor. Dont drain the tranny unless it was underwater for a long time.I'ts a 3/4 bolt behind the skid.Any Questions ? I'm online

dam, the same thing happend to one of my friends. his throttle stuck and he took a dump into a pond. drain all the plugs. change oil, counter balance, transmission, etc and let cycle thru. change again for like eight or nine times. it should work. at least it did for him.
