Well, actually it's an Xtreme 90. It's made by Aeon, exactly the same as the Scrambler and Sportsman 90's. Here's the problem: We went riding and the area we went to was VERY muddy. He was just barely able to get through, which he did, but on the return the quad just died while going through and has not started since. I've replace the air filter, which was wet and very dirty, I removed the carb. and tore it all apart and cleaned it very well. It actually had mud in the carb. Bad, I know. I put a new spark plug in it as well. No luck. I do not have spark and fuel is flowing. If I use a dvm on the 2 wires going to, I assume the coil pack, I get 120v when I hit the starter button, but no spark. It turns over just fine. Anyone come across this before? I'm stumped.

Stebob--are you assuming you have no spark cause it wont start or do you have no spark showing at the electrode with the plug out and cranking the engine with wire/plug grounded ?
Mud in Carb!...sounds like the machine is water logged. Did ya crank the engine over with the plug out to blow the crap out of the cylinder?
The ignition was obviously turned on right!?( Not being a smart a$$ )
120 Volts !!! ??? I know its not a generator, its a ATV...( being a smart a$$ ) Maybe a typo do ya mean 12 volts from battery? The machine is not running so you should not show voltage other than battery.
Almost for sure has to be an ignition issue if no spark. Does the machine have any type of fuse or fuseable link at or near the battery?
When it died did it backfire or just die...Is there compression in the cylinder? Was it surging before it died or making any strange noise? Water in gas ?
More input Stebob

No spark with the plug out a looking directly at it. However, I didn't ground the plug or wire...? Not sure what ya mean there. I pulled the plug and held it out while hitting the starter. I also took a small screw driver to see if it would spark against the frame. No luck.

Yes, I turned it over a few times to get the junk out of the cylinder. Yeah, made sure the switch was in run, too.

And, yes, 120v!!! Only when the starter was being depressed. I thought that odd, too, but not sure. I thought maybe there was a step up in voltage somewhere to get the coil to fire.

There is a fuse near the battery, but I figured that it wouldn't turn over if that fuse was blown. I'll admit that I did not check the fuse because I assumed it wouldn't turn over. I'll check it tonight.

It just died. No backfire or anything. I did not check compression. Water in the gas...hmmm...possible. I'll put fresh in. It was not doing anything odd, just died. No funny noises or anything.

When you ground the plug...you take the plug out...leave the wire connected to the plug still...and then place the tip of the plug to a ground (metal) then kick it over..(turn the engine over) and you'll see if it sparks or not..thats how you test if your getting spark...
.
.and a 120Volts!!! wow..I find that very odd..

All I can say,,is drain that gas...get some good gas in it....and if you have spark and everything..then squirt a little bit of ether into the air intake that goes to the carb...(don't spray to much..you don't want to burn anything up)....but try that and see if you can get it to fire up...I had to do that once when I couldn't start my scrammy forever.

Ok...I removed the stator and it was filthy. Got it all cleaned up and now have good spark on the plug!!! However, I'm still facing the same problem, it won't start. I have fuel AND spark, but she still won't fire up and run. Any other tips or suggestions? I'm going to check compression tonight. Does anyone know what the compression should be at??

Anything under 100 and the machine will probably not run or run very bad. I will check my manual and give you the factory numbers in a few minutes...(If I find the FREAKING manual in my mess of a garage.

OK Stebob here it is. This is from the 1999-2000 Scrambler 400 Manual !

Cylinder compression 2-stroker Service Limit is ...115 PSI

COMPRESSION TEST---

1) Remove Spark Plug and install compression tester...(DUH!..LOL)

2) Connect High tension spark plug lead to a good ground on engine...

3) Open Throttle and crank engine until Maximum reading is obtained (approxximately 3-5 Revolutions)

Thats it!! Good Luck

Thanks a ton!! I assume 115psi is what the little 90 should read, too, huh?
