Son of a b&*$#'n oil tank screen!!
#1
I went to change my oil over the weekend in my 04 500ho and thought I should check the screen in the oil tank. The fitting didn't seem to want to loosen so i gave it a stronger pull... All of a sudden I hear CRACK! and it comes loose. After further inspection the stinking plasting tank cracked around the fitting flange. The book says you should check this screen, why would they design an oil reservoir that would break that easily? They want $90 at the dealer for a new one!

I did my scrammys first change not to long ago and thought the same thing. I just never checked it. I gave it a couple of good tugs and said the hell with it. I figure if its that hard to check it it shouldn't be that important. Sorry to hear yours broke!

I was just reading on another board the same thing just happened to a guy. He said he bought a new tank and then made some special wrench to reach it. You might want to look on eBay and see if you can find the older style metal one.

Glad I got the aluminum one I was never able to get that fitting off until I got myself an air ratchet. Come to find out, the screen was clean too.

Ya, I tried once also...but I figured anything that hard to get off wasn't meant to come off...so I just said the hell with it and left it...hate to hear you have to buy a new one...I hate spending money on my quad on things I don't want to spend it on

I took a small solder iron and melted the crackes back together, then used some JB Weld over the cracks. It doesn't seem to be leaking now, but I worry about the next time I take the screen out that it might do it again...

Chock up another busted tank. Wish I had found this thread BEFORE I followed the Polaris factory instructions and busted the fitting right out of the tank like the others...then of course the screen was spotless after all that.
Now I get to spend $99 for a new tank....so much for saving money doing my own oil change.
I think Polaris should remove this step from their instructions, unless they like selling oil tanks.

I tryed on my first oil change and heard a crack and stopped. Worry for a while but it didnt crack on the outside but I think it did on the inside. Said the heck with it as well. 2 things, 1 why didnt they put in on the line outside the tank, 2 Why have it with the motor having an oil filter on it. IMO
