Default clutching for the dunes, and or trails

My cluching is basically tuned for the trails. I went to Silver Lake this past weekend and my buddy took his vidcam with us. I don't have any problems climbing hills, as when I get into my power band rpm range it stays there til I let up. It is just when I drag race I noticed on the videos that it takes a second to get the rpm up. Should it snap right up to the powerband rpm range right away? I would think that if you set the clutch up for the trail, you would want to have it engage at a slightly lower rpm range so you wouldn't get to much wheel spin in the corners and low end. But in the dunes with the correct tires(paddles) you would want it to jump right up to the power band. Is this right? To do this would I need to change the primary spring? What is the suggestions?

I would like to keep things simple, as I do go back and forth between riding the dunes and the trail, but I would like to be optimum for both when I do one or the other... If it gets to complecated of a set up for each, would I be better off getting another primary and setting it up for the dune while leaving the other for the trail?

Sounds like your serious about your sand riding so I would say go for it. I am far from the expert here but the primary spring is pretty easy to change. If I was changing it on a regular basis I would prolly mod the clutch cover so I wouldn't have to take it off to get at the primary. Maybe cut a section out and put it on a hinge and a couple of quick latches, just make it good so it don't come off while your riding! Then you just have a few small bolts and the center bolt to change the primary spring, a 5 to 10 min job... sorta like changing tires for the sand. As far as what springs to try I have no idea maybe let everyone here know what you are running for springs now.
Good luck with your project,
Replay
btw: nice list of toys! I would prolly spend way too much time on the cr500

Redbullssg, what you want to do is get a spring that has almost the same second (shift) number while increasing the first (engagement) number for the sand. What that will do is naturally let the engine come up in the rpms a little more before engaging and will let it "snap in" better when it engages creating more wheel speed and wheel spin to get you going. If you get too large of a second number it will push the motor rpms too far up and out of the pipe's power range. I see you show to have the trail mod. What weights and primary spring is in it right now?

I willo have to get back with you on that, as I can't remember what they are at the moment. It has been so long since I put it in, actually right after I bought it in 97'... Keep an eye out, and I will let yall know tomarrow...

Replay, great idea, but I am more concerned with the looks. I have thought about getting rid of it all together, as I am not concerned about water. I don't take it through the mud anylonger, dun that, tired of it. I keep this thing clean, and mud and clean just don't mix, LOL!!! I have to come up with something that looks good and will keep the belt from slapping me like the redheaded step child that I am... I am going to fab something up for the center chain that is easy access on the other side out of Aluminum, at the same time I should make something for the clutch...

I will get back as soon as I can with the spring and weights....

Redbullssg .... Sounds good, post a pic for us when you get it done. I go around mud holes or wheelie through them. I'm not that picky about looks, I am just too lazy to wash all the sticky stuff off.

BigNig .... Sounds like my kinda fun, I worry more about Not living then I do about dieing! I ride a dirt bike about 1/2 the time and my Z400 the other half, and the wifes TB250 when she will let me... lol

I had an 87' cr500, the thing is just nuts. When it came time to rebuild it, I never put it back in the bike, as I knoew that i would kill myself on it. My plan is to put it in a LT500 frame, but I am still not sure what I want to do with it... I think that it would make a bad azz dunemachine motor. But I have also thought aboutputting it in an Indy GoCart frame...

OK, I have a HPD Aggressive clutch with a brown primary, and a purple(lavander) secondary spring. The weights are 10AL • 53 Grams, and I am not sure what the secondary is set on, but i assume that it is 2-2, as I have not taken it completly appart and the back hole is on 2...

Damn, all this time I thought that I had a HotSeat clutch and pipe, what a dumbazz...!!! I would rather have a HPD anyhow!!

OK, the secondary is perfect, dont worry about it. The primary needs some work. If you like that for trail riding, I would recommend putting in a set of stock weights (s-55) to run with that spring for trail riding. That's how we are set up. When you want to go hit the dunes, then you can either put in a red/yellow spring, or even just a red spring. You cant use either one of those with the 53 weights, but with the 55's it will really come out of the hole a lot harder and still pull great on top.Setting it up with the stock weights will also make it come out harder because the S series weights hit harder on takeoff than the 10 series do. Hope this helps,Bubba
