01 Raptor backfires. Yes I searched a bunch...

Hello all, I have only posted once before but have done a lot of reading and searching.
I did read several suggestions and comments on backfires in regards to lean and rich setting along with getting.
My problem is I bought this bike from the dealer which I will be taking back to but I want to know for my own peace of mind what it needs or most likely needs.
It was modified for mostly sand riding/racing but I do mostly trails. It has a Stave IV full pipe, dual K&N filters with no box and had been jetted but don’t know what size yet. It idles great and runs at low RPS good. Full throttle it runs great, anything in between it sputters and wants to die like it's starving for gas. It does this on the flats but is 2x as bad going up hills. I'm guessing getting or could this be a float issue. It does this 100% of the time.
Oh yeah, I also changed out the plug and it was prety black, not caked with oil or anthing, just black like running rich. It actulay cuts out like it is starving for gas rather than getting to much.
I will be taking it to the dealer this week to have them take care of it which I don’t think will be an issue. I appreciate any advice anyone might have though.
Thanks

Talked to the dealer today. They guess it is the jetting but don’t known why. They are going to research the history and see what work they had done on it in the past. I was told they did the jetting work so hopefully I will get a nice break on price. They said it could cost up to $160, does this sound about right? Is this something I should try myself first? I'm very mechanical but have not played with a quad for quite some time. Any suggestions would be helpful...

So what would be suggested for jets? I have no clue on sizes or how much to jump up per mod. Do I just pick them up at the dealer or where is the best/fastest place to get them?
I have a Trinity Stage IV full exhaust
K&N dual filters with no air box
Im not sure if there has been any head or valve work but I dont think so

I have been doing a LOT more searching. Sounds like my problem might be as simple as the float levels. I keep finding threads saying to check sixsixT clear tube method but I cant find it and I’m searching everything sixsixT has written. Please someone give me the link.
Thanks

It sounds like your running pretty rich.
Try putting main jets 160/165, air fuel screw out 3 turns, needle on 3rd notch (if its on the third notch take it to the second), and make sure it has a stock pilot jet in it. That should get you pretty close.

If you have a real free flowing exhaust, you might not ever get rid of all the popping, just the way it is. Check for intake leaks, that will lean out the mixture too. The popping is due to lean, in the pilot circuit, and the plugs are fowled from either the mid range or mains. Heres an article thatll help you jet, and it lists the symptoms of lean and rich, which is easier than plug reading.

OK this morning I dug into the carbs. So far I found that the jets where 175s. Everything looks very clean inside but I will still spray everything out.
Both the air intake and carb manifold sides were very loose so I'm sure it was sucking air. After I put everything back I think it should be running better and I went down to 165 for jets. I got a set of 155 also just in case.
I was told by one of the mechanics at the dealer that if midrange is bad the needle could also be bad. I have no clue what to look for on the needle except for the obvious bent or worn areas. Are there different needles other than stock?
Thanks again for the help.
