When does Raptor Cooling Fan come on?
#1
I was going over my bike the other day and, realized i've never heard the fan come on nor, noticed it running on my Raptor. I was wondering, does it come on after a certain temp, only when it over heats or, what?
Over Meemorial Weekend i was riding and, turned out the bike was running lean, it got a little hot and, i turned the bike off then clicked the key back to the on position to try and, get the fan to turn on to cool it down but it didn't come on.??

The only time I ever heard mine come on is when I got stuck in deep snow and was trying to get out. It has to get pretty hot before it comes on. Keep the mud off the radiator or you will definately hear it come on.

When you're running hot, and you stop to shut the bike down, use the handlebar kill switch to turn off the engine while leaving the key in the "on" position. Then, if it is needed, the fan will continue to run with the engine off giving you some needed cooling.
That's a tip from yer uncle Shady.

When mine was new it used to run alot. But lately it hardly ever runs, only when I get the radiator really muddy or sitting in a bottleneck at an XC race. Probably because I always run really rich. Keeps the engine a little cooler.

I don't know but Yamaha may have had a bad run of radiator fans. My 2004 is three months old, and I noticed the fan didn't run much anymore. The other day the temp light came on and I killed it with the key on to keep the fan going.....but it would not come on. I took it in to the dealer, they replaced it under warranty and now it runs just fine. I was suprised by how much it comes on now....since I didn't really notice it before. I think running through water takes a toll on the fan, I dunno.
