polaris sportsman starter fails... suggestions?
#1
It's probably due to me driving in 3+ feet of water but my starter crapped the bed.. Is there anything I can do to repair it myself or save from spending $300 for a new one? I'd even buy a used one if you knew were to locate one.. Thanks!

Before you go and buy a new one, lets get some more info first. What year machine? How many hours/miles? What exactly is the starter doing? Yoiu may be able to get by with a rebuild kit. In fact, I just rebuilt my starter this weekend from a kit on Ebay. I would suggest removing the starter first. Then you will be able to determine the exact cause. Most likely it is the brushes are corroded and worn. But also check the armature shaft splines and test the armature for proper resistence as well as checking the magnets. But, you can probably get away with a $35 rebuild kit.

ohhh.. its a 99 sportsman 335 w/ about 1300 miles. It's slow, weak, and the engine/trans sounds like its about to explode but its my father inlaws pride and joy so I will fix it. I'll start with your suggestion and remove the starter before purchasing a new one to hopefully find out I can rebuild it. I'm sure it siezed up due to mud and water.

When mine went bad, I would push the starter button and could hear the solonoid clicking, but the starter wouldnt move. Took it off and apar and found the brushed to be corroded and worn down. There was also a lot of electrolisys in there. Replaced the parts with the rebuild kit and she is as good as new. I am willing to bet that that is your problem too, the brushes. Let us know what happens

yep this is doing the same thing, solenoid clicking, power to the starter but starter seems sized.. Hopefully the rebuild kit works for me too!
