Prairie 650 Drive Trouble
#1
I could use some advice. My 2002 650 has had some belt trouble. I've burned off my share of belts and wanted to know if it is possible or desireable to upgrade to the 700 driven pully. Currently it seems my CVT gets extremely hot and the last belt only lasted maybe 50 miles. It was the new 700 belt, but after reading some posts here I found out that I needed to clean out the debris from my CVT vent which was clogged, so I'll take the blame for the last belt burning up. Is it typical for the top layer of cogs to come off the belt first, or could this be a clue to my problem? I have read a few posts about the bushings going bad, what is the best replacement option if this is my problem?

welcome to the forums... ( been there done that ), I had to replace my secondary clutch, as the bushings are prone to wear on those, & not ( by Kawi, replaceable )... when the bushings are worn, there is a side to side wobble, & the belts will only last a few miles... if you order a new one, for your '02, you will automatically get the updated '03 secondary... & yes, the 700's will go on just fine... I don't think there is significant improvements between the '03 & '04 secondaries... however, the '04 primary has had significant improvements, & if anyone needed to replace their primary, I highly recommend the '04 primary...

they are not cheap... I think I had $700.00 into the pair, when I replaced mine ( wish I had known about the 700 Primarys, back then ), you should switch to the 700 belt, at the same time ( you can also run it with the 650 clutches, with extra secondary sims ), it is a much improved belt, over the older 650 belt...... Comet is coming out with a new Praimary this summer, to fit the Prairies... that could have some interesting performance advanyages ( or so it is claimed anyway )

RED... IMO, yes... the 700 belt is definately better, the secondary clutch is the same as the improved '03 model, as far as I know, & the primary has been improved... it now has a 2 angle inner front sheave, instead of the single angle sheave, that has been standard on all the 650's... if desired, this can be used with the Dalton V Force "over drive" primary cover, & it will allow the belt to fully travel to the top of the primary clutch... the stock clutches stop the belt, about 1/2" from the top of the Primary clutch, severly limiting the top speed...

IceRider:
I have seen the exact same symptoms as you mentioned, heating belt, burning it off in very few miles. Solution was to replace the secondary pully (the half with the busings in it) from a 700, with a 700 belt, 1.4 mm shim, and the problems were eliminated. Belt is nice and tight and works perfectly.
Price was around $250 Canadian(give or take a few $$$) for the half of the pulley.
